Help identify a Classic Musical

The song that goes "Smile though your heart is breaking..."

A coworker told me it was a trademark tune from Charlie Chaplin but of course it wouldnt of had words.

So, when did it get the words--a newer movie? What context was it sung in? From what kind of person? about what?

Any help would be appreciated!

It's amazing how well Google works.

If you try, that is. ;)

Sorry! I guess I assumed all Chaplin movies had no words (except stills)

Actually, from Modern Times on they're all sound films, although Modern Times doesn't have any diagetic sound dialogue.

So would I be correct in saying the song 'smile' never appeared in a musical? (with words as we know it now)

The music score was composed by Chaplin himself. The romance theme was later given words and became better known as the song "Smile" ("Smile though your heart is breaking...") and was covered by such artists as Liberace and Nat King Cole.
