Guitar World Names 100 Worst Riffs, Solos

Fri Oct 8,12:11 PM ET Entertainment - AP Music

NEW YORK - He may be known for his over-the-top antics but Poison guitarist C.C. DeVille has another claim to fame: his "Guitar Solo" has been named the worst of all time by Guitar World magazine.

The magazine selected the "100 Worst Riffs, Licks & Solos of All Time," identifying ones that are "lazy," "boring," "just plain stoopid," or "involve C.C. Deville."

The list includes songs by David Bowie, Def Leppard, Metallica, Green Day, B.B. King, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith and The Strokes, among others. Many are guitar legends who simply had a bad night or bum note.

Guitar World describes DeVille's nine-minute solo "completely devoid of taste, structure or steady tempo" and recommends every budding guitarist listen to it because "surely, they can't do any worse."

DeVille was also cited for his "Cherry Pie" solo when he played with Warrant and Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn."

The magazine recommends DeVille "take solace in the fact that he's in some rather good company."

Rounding out the top 10: "Summertime Blues," Blue Cheer; "The Game of Love," Carlos Santana; Falstaff beer 1967 radio spot, Cream; "All You Need is Love," The Beatles; "Thirsty and Miserable," Black Flag; "Wango Tango," Ted Nugent; "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," Rolling Stones; "Sting of the Bumblebee," Manowar; and "American Woman," Lenny Kravitz.

The list appears in the magazine's December issue.
Not much of a metalhead myself, but I still thought this was amusing... Lots of great acts listed amongst all the dreck, so I guess anybody can record a few losers...

I sure hope David Bowie's mention was for Let's Dance. Ugh.

Blasphemy. That was Stevie Ray Vaughan doing the solo and his playing MADE that album.

True, but it's one of SRV's WORST solos ever.

THIS may be blasphemy, but Cinnamon Girl is my worst. Thanks for the one note, Neil Young.

That's part of what I like about Neil. It's not how many notes he can cram in but what he can do with that one note.

Working within the constraints of a non-blues album, it was a great solo that added a soulful punch to an otherwise antiseptic 80's pop song. I prefer his solo on "China Girl", but I still like it.

I'll take SRV's worst solo over most anyone else's best.

Someone I know (is he reading this now?) would easily suggest Jimmy Page's solo on "Heartbreaker"...I believe that's the song. It's one of their tunes that I don't know very well, so I'm not certain.

For the life of me I can't remember which song (or even which album)...but I know I've heard a stinker or two from Tony Iommi. Surely though he's better known for his rhythm guitar, not his leads. I can narrow it down to "on the Ozzy albums," since those are the only ones I have. I'll update it as I listen...

Only solos from bands that started in the 90's to today should have been considered, since that's when rock music started to go down hill.

Worst solos ever? C. C. Deville has pretty much sucked consistently, but that's too easy.

I always thought the guitarist from "Living Colour" (Vernon Dozier?) always sounded sloppy as hell. The guitarwork on their first album was pretty terrible (Cult of Personality always sounded like a cacophanous melange.)

I love Blur, but there's no redeeming Coxon's solo in Coffee & TV. I'm more USED to it now.

Thayil's solo in Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun can also be thrown in the incinerator. It's messy and ill-fitting.

How about the solo from REM's What's The Frequency, Kenneth?

That's just silly. Unless you were joking - were you?

I kept my list to the 90's just for you though...

What's wrong with "All You Need Is Love"? I like George's solo.

I thought Pete Townsend owned the worst 100 guitar solos of alltime

Course his rhythm playing more than makes up for that

Hey, it's the only guitar solo I know note for note!

Well, not really.

I haven't read the list, but if making a bum note counts for a bad solo then I wouldn't care for it. I LOVE short, sloppy feedback driven solos.
