Johnny Ramone, dead?

I can't find anything on the internet yet, but our local radio station Indie 103.1 is reporting that he died today.

They've been playing back to back Ramones songs, intercut with people calling n saying things about Johnny's death.

Sadly, the news is true:

Johnny Ramone, member of punk legends 'The Ramones,' dies at 55

LOS ANGELES – Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of the seminal punk band "The Ramones," has died. He was 55.

Ramone died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, his publicist said.

He had been fighting a five-year battle with prostate cancer.

Ramone, whose birth name is John Cummings, had been hospitalized in June at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Johnny Ramone was one of the original members of the Ramones, whose hit songs "I Wanna Be Sedated" and "Blitzkrieg Bop," among others, earned them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

The band's singer, Joey Ramone, whose real name is Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Bassist Dee Dee Ramone, whose real name is Douglas Colvin, died from a drug overdose in 2002.

Johnny Ramone co-founded "The Ramones" in 1974 along with Joey Ramone, DeeDee Ramone and Tommy Ramone, who is the only surviving member of the original band.

A tribute concert and cancer research fund-raiser was held Sunday in Los Angeles to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary. It featured performances from Los Angeles punk band X, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Henry Rollins and others.

Along with his wife, Linda Cummings, Johnny Ramone was surrounded at his death by friends Eddie and Jill Vedder, Rob and Sherrie Zombie and others. Other friends who gathered at his Los Angeles home included Lisa Marie Presley, Pete Yorn, Vincent Gallo and Talia Shire.

He is survived by his wife and his mother, Estelle Cummings. He will be cremated during a private ceremony.

Sad news. They're dropping like flies. Richie is the only one left now.

Does anyone know if Johnny was the Republican Ramone?

Johnny was the republican. While he wasn't a founder, Marky was a long time member, and still alive.

:(

I was going to start a thread. Their new DVD "Ramones Raw" will be out very soon.

sad news. i just got done reading Ramones : The Complete Twisted History, very interesting indeed. definitely a band that had major issues with each other, yet still stayed together for the most part.

SPiRAL 09-16-04 01:19 AM

R.I.P. Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee. :(

Well, I guess, there's more than one still alive. Here's some information I found on Richie:

RICHIE RAMONE, EX-DRUMMER
Real name: Richard Reinhardt (Beau)
Date and place of birth: August 11.1957
Ramones career: Came to the band April 83 and left 88.
Play on albums: Too Tough To Die, Animal Boy and Halfway To Sanity.
Other bands: Velveteens

Latest news (January 2004): Richie works at some hotel in Florida and he has put the Ramones behind him unfortunately. After 2000 he was a caddie at a private golf club in Los Angeles.
Joey's funeral was a private family affair, April 17, two days after he passed away. Services began at 12:30 in Schwartz Brothers Memorial Chapels. Johnny, Dee Dee and Marky couldn't be there, but Tommy, CJ and Richie were in attendance - a very bold and heartfelt move from Richie, who had been estranged from the other Ramones for years.

Sad...:(

:( Man, how strange that the three main guys went out so young and not because of rock excess (well, at least two of them). I'm happy that I got to see them three times... two of those with Dee Dee. As influencial as the Ramones were, they meant more to me for being plain 'ol fun. That's rock'n'roll to me.

RIP Johnny

Very sad. I love The Ramones and Johnny will be missed, along with Joey and Dee Dee.

Gabba gabba hey, Johnny, wherever you are!

Mutley Hyde 09-16-04 01:03 PM

This is a shame, but wasn't fully unexpected. R.I.P. Johnny, you and the guys gave us so much.

take a lesson from this, even though you may not want someones finger in your butt, you should get your prostate checked

Buford T Pusser 09-17-04 01:31 PM

strong agreement.

And who knows, maybe you'll like it. Gabba Gabba Hey!

devilpants 09-17-04 03:50 PM

"I Wanna Be Well" indeed.

"My future's bleak, ain't it neat". The way the band laughed at fatality in light of their premature personal demise seems really strange. Adios amigos!
