U2 leads list of 2005 R&R Hall of Fame nominees
from billboard.com
U2, Grandmaster Flash Lead Rock Hall Nominees
U2, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Randy Newman and the O'Jays are among the nominees for the 2005 induction class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are joined on the ballot by the Pretenders, Buddy Guy, Wanda Jackson, the J. Geils Band, Conway Twitty and Percy Sledge.
The Sex Pistols, the Stooges, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the late Gram Parsons were previously nominated but remain on this year's ballot.
Artists become eligible 25 years after the release of their first recording. A Foundation committee nominates eligible artists, who are then voted on by an international body of about 700 music experts. Results will be announced in December, with the induction to take place next spring.
The 2004 induction class featured Prince, Bob Seger, ZZ Top, Jackson Browne and the late George Harrison, among others.

How on God's green earth did The Sex Pistols get passed over?????
Grandmaster Flash is a bigger nominee than The Pretenders?????
Well, at least U2 will go in on a high note (appently) with a strong album just released. Can't really believe they've been around a quarter century. Damn, I'm old.

I'm not really a fan of metal but the fact that Black Sabbath is not in is a farce.

O.k. I understood why Van Halen wasn't picked last time since none of the lead singers were talkin to the band and the Hall didn't want the 1st band not to show up at the Hal. But now that the group is back together what's the reason for not puttin' them in this time?
Their 1st record came out in 1978!!!!

For the Pistols not to be inducted the first time is ridiculous, altho they can always laugh at the fact that they will inevitably be hall of fame artists with one album under their belts!
J. Geils.. whatev.

I know a lot of people like him, and he'll most likely get in, but I feel it is my sacred duty to proclaim that I fucking hate Randy Newman.
And once again, where's Rush, KISS, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc...

Is Randy Newman rock in ANY way?
No Black Sabbath is a frickin joke. Once bands that ripped them off start getting in instead of them we'll have a problem.

even though i like the Sex Pistols, they should NEVER go in, at least not as a band. maybe in some classic album category. sorry, a band that was together for like 2 years and made one album, and were total poseurs should not go in. theyre the punk rock spice girls.

Artificial like the spice girls? Sure.
The face of a cultural movement that still echoes nearly 30 years later? Not bloody likely.
And Sabbath absolutely deserves to be inducted as well.

Don't remember where or when I read this--I think when they were on the ballot the first time--but I'm pretty sure the Sex Pistols have said that they don't want to be nominated and, if chosen, would refuse to participate, or refuse the induction, or something along those lines.

Because while they are "popular" they really haven't been all that influential. At least I don't hear thier influence anywhere. Someone like The Ramones never sold huge amounts of records but they kicked off the punk movement and inspire bands even today such as Green Day and the Foo Fighters. An even better example is Big Star. Alex Chilton influenced people like REM, the Replacements, Nirvana, Matthew Sweet and others (speaking of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain was quoted in a Rolling Stone interview that he always wanted to have the fame of a John Lennon but the anonymity of a George Harrison or Bun E. Carlos...).
