Older Rock Suggestions

My older brother sent me a CD compilation with some really nice rock tracks from back in the day and I'd like to hear some of your suggestions for songs that have the same(or similar) rock edge sound...

Some songs off the compilation are

ACDC - Shoot To Thrill
The Cult - Fire Woman
Van Halen - Panama

I'd like to get some more ACDC tracks but I don't know which ones are their better titles.....they have so many.

Anyway, if you guys can just post up a title or two I'd really appreciate. I am open to suggestion :) I know those titles aren't really that old but I hardly hear that sound of rock anymore by todays bands.

nodeerforamonth 09-02-04 12:38 PM

For today's bands, check out The Darkness. And the Wildhearts.

For older bands, check out

Motley Crue "Shout At The Devil"
any AC/DC before "Fly On The Wall" (start w/ "Back In Black", then "For those About To Rock" then go backwards and get the reall gems!)
Aerosmith "Toys In The Attic" and "Rocks"
any David Lee Roth era Van Halen
Guns & Roses "Appetite For Destruction"

tons more... I'll post more as they come to me...

jessecrx 09-02-04 12:52 PM

Awesome man! Thanks! I have this Led Zeppelin song in my head that had a really hard edge to it but I can't figure it out to save my life! Keep 'em comin man! I appreciate the suggestions.

Try Jet, an Australian band that sounds (kinda) like a cross between The Strokes and AC/DC.

dick_grayson 09-02-04 01:44 PM

some Who or Sabbath, maybe?

Got their album, but man, there were WAY too many slow songs and ballads on it. The only 2 rockers on it were the 2 songs you hear on the radio!

nodeerforamonth 09-02-04 01:56 PM

oh doy!

Forgot the Hottest Band In The Land: KISS

Must haves are KISS Alive, Dressed to Kill, KISS, Hotter Than Hell, Detroyer, and Love Gun

nodeerforamonth 09-02-04 02:43 PM

Also for more older, great quality rock, check out:

Dictators, any of their first 3 albums
New York Dolls, first album (this band inspired KISS, Motely, GnR, and practically every single band of that genre)
Def Leppard "High n Dry"
Ramones (first 4 albums)

More newer bands that waive the classic rock, kick ass flag:

The Donnas (the guitarist could be the new Ace Frehley. Every solo/note MEANS something)
The Hellacopters (the later albums: "Grande Rock", "High Visibility", and "By The Grace Of God")

A GREAT book to read is: Fargo Rock City. So good, as soon as I was done with it, I wanted to read it again!

Some Kiss songs I have and really like are

Lick It Up
Heaven's On Fire
Deuce

I'll check out those other Kiss titles! Thanks nodeerforamonth!

Black Sabbath?? I think I have Iron Man(Kind of a slower rock song and a bit on the dark side). I like it but not exactly the kind of sound I was lookin for. Paranoid is a good track and I like that one alot. Don't know any others that they have that sounds similar to it. I was able to find a song called "Secret Loser" that I just happen to come accross on a whim....really good song.

Motley Crue I have:

Wild Side
Girls Girls Girls
Dr Feelgood
Kickstart My Heart

I can remember hearing on a local station one of Motley Crue's newer tracks(or was it Vince Neil) and damn that song was great! It was real old fashion style rock song with great drum beats and guitar riffs. I just cant remember the name! My memory is suck!

Aerosmith, I have

Sweet Emotion(One of My Faves!)
Love In an Elavator
Rag Doll

Guns N Roses I have

Welcome To The Jungle
Sweet Child O Mine
Paradise City
Don't Cry
You Could Be Mine

Queensryche I have

The Best I Can
Operation Mindcrime
Eyes Of A Stranger

I am also lookin for some Ted Nugent songs.....all I have is Stranglehold...mainly because I love the long guitar solo in the middle of the song.

Those song titles are the epitomy of the 80's. Hilarious.

Despite the fact that one is from the 70's and some are 90's I have to agree. They just released a killer cd this past May entitled "Rockin' In My Outer Space". I still love them, one of the best bands out there today.

With kiss somebody mentioned alot of there real old stuff from the 70's, in my opinion they were much better in the 80's and 90's so checkout these albums,
lick it up - there best album out there
animalize
revenge
carnival of souls - there last album before putting the makeup back on, it's a very underrated album.

Can't go wrong with anything from motley crue, my favorites are "Too fast for love" and "Dr. Feelgood" and there latest cd "new tattoo" is great i've been jamming it in my truck all week.

Aerosmith checkout the albums, "rock in a hard place" and "get a grip"

Queensryche and Guns and Roses are great too with about anything that they have released

Now we get to the motorcity madman Ted Nugent checkout this song if you can find it, it's called "Tied up in love" it's off the album predator the album itself i didn't care for but that song especially the beginning riff is really good, my personal favorite ted song, also checkout the album "little miss dangerous".

Also i think you should check out Ratt, this band knows how to rock they didn't put out many ballads, checkout these ratt albums "out of the cellar", "invasion of your privacy", "dancing undercover" and "reach for the sky" for a start.

And i can't say enough about this album just check it out, Winger "pull" i'm a fan of all there music but this album stands out by far from there work.

And somebody mentioned AC/DC they recommended "fly on the wall" and earlier great suggestion, but checkout there other stuff too especially "the razors edge" a great album, only album from ac/dc in my opinion that wasn't any good was "blow up your video" it's crap, but thats my opinion, only brian johnson era album by ac/dc that i don't own.

Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio is pretty good too they made a few albums together checkout "the mob rules" and "heaven and hell" also they made an album with the singer from deep purple Ian Gillian my personal favorite sabbath album to date it's called "born again".

Also highly recommend these bands:

"All" Van Halen - David, Sammy and Gary
Iron Maiden
Def Leppard
Megadeth
Firehouse
Skidrow
Krokus
Slaughter
Boston
Judas Priest
Ozzy Osbourne
Metallica
Scorpions
Twisted Sister
Sammy Hagar
Joe Satriani
Rush
Triumph
Fastway
Dio

Could the Led song be Black Dog?

Global Observer 09-04-04 05:47 PM

Uriah Heep
Captain Beyond
Armageddon
Dust
Montrose
Bloodrock
Legs Diamond
Nitzinger
Trapeze
Cactus
Beck Bogert & Appice
Wishbone Ash
Spooky Tooth
Spirit
Blues Image
High Tide

In a similar vein, check out:

"Feel Like Making Love" - Bad Company
"Satisfaction" - Rolling Stones

Someone mentioned Wishbone Ash and I would recommend their track "You See Red".

From the '70s.

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Self-titled. Kick-ass bluesy/medieval-themed rawk in the vein of Led Zeppelin, though more comic-booky. Which is pretty much what you'd expect with Ronnie Dio doing vocals.

Nazareth. Albums: "Hair of the Dog" and "Expect No Mercy" (ENM might be out of print and hard to find, though. I have a record of it I bought for a dollar about fifteen years ago.)

AC/DC - Okay, they have a lot of albums out, but a lot of it is repetitious. The best places to start are "Highway to Hell" and "Black in Black." This is easily their most fertile creative period. Also worth checking out are the earlier Bon Scott albums like "74 Jailbreak," "Dirth Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," and "High Voltage." Their 80s output after "Back in Black" is generally average. "For Those About to Rock" is a good album, but not up to "Back in Black." "Flick of the Switch," "Fly on the Wall," and "Blow Up Your Video" are kind of crap... one or two good songs and a lot of filler. This is one band that could definitely use a 2-disc "Best of" compilation: 1 disc for Bon, 1 for Brian.

Albums from the 80s:

Judas Priest
-"Point of Entry"
-"British Steel"
-"Screaming for Vengeance"

Iron Maiden
-"Iron Maiden"
-"Killers"
-"Number of the Beast"
-"Piece of Mind"
-"Powerslave"
-"Live After Death"
-"Somewhere in Time"
-"Seventh Son of a Seventh Son"

Ozzy Osbourne
-"Blizzard of Ozz"
-"Diary of a Madman"

Motley Crue
-"Motley Crue"
-"Shout at the Devil"
-"Theater of Pain"
-"Girls Girls Girls"

Dio
-"Holy Diver"
-"Last in Line"
-"Dream Evil"

Guns and Roses
-"Appetite for Destruction"
-"GNR Lies"
-"Use Your Illusion Pt. 1"
-"Use Your Illusion Pt. 2"

Quiet Riot
-"Metal Health" (All you really need from them)

Twisted Sister
-"Stay Hungry" (avoid anything after this album!)

Ratt
-"Ratt and Roll 8191" Best of compilation. Their individual albums aren't particularly strong... this way you get all of their best material condensed into a single album.

Def Leppard
-"High and Dry"
-"Pyromania"
-"Hysteria" (I don't like this album... too pop for my tastes, but it has its fans.)

Osiris 09-05-04 11:04 AM

Some more bands to try:

Iron Maiden
Fastay
Alcatrazz
Rainbow
Loudness
Keel
Tesla

No offensive, but these bands are from the 80s. Not exactly the dinosaur area. I think by most standards the last twenty years can be considered modern times.

No offensive [sic], but 20 years ago qualifies both as "older" and "back in the day."
