Why is Ashlee Simpson's album #1?
 

Are American record buyers really as stupid, shallow and facile as it appears from the success of this latest pop tart?

It's not like she is the first teen singer to have a #1 album. Out of curiosity, have you even heard any of the album?
While her album is not my cup of tea, I've heard a few songs and I think it's better than most of the other "top 40" music out right now.

Just like Kelly Osbourne, who also had zero talent, Ashlee will be a forgotten memory within the year. Both of their television shows are what got them their fame, not their music talent. It just amazes me that two girls who cant sing worth SHIT can somehow manage to get people to buy their "music", or should I say studio musician's music with pathetic karaoke girls singing over it. Bottom line both of em are biting of their family's members success.

For the same reason reality shows are #1 - Americans have no taste

Because more people bought her album than any other over the past week.

Hey, I wouldn't know an Ashlee Simpson song if it leaned over and spit on me, but to echo Obey, have any of you actually heard any of the album?

We could get into a loooooong argument about snobbery/elitism/populism (and I am not, repeat, not throwing any of those claims at any poster in here), but it does seem, erm, odd to villify an album if you haven't heard any of it. (And I don't know, maybe you all have. I haven't, and sure don't plan to, either.)

A better question is how many of the mall rat zombies who bought the album actually heard it and how many are part of the herd culture that let's pre-pubescent no talents become mega stars while countless talented bands fester in obscurity.

And related to that is the fact that both album sales and reality show ratings are driven mainly by 14 year-olds.

What's the big deal if someone buys and likes an album you would never want? I'm sure everyone has bought an album of two that we wouldn't be caught dead with.

You got me. Like American Idol and her show Nick and Jessica, these are fads I just dont understand.

Our radio station has a mix of her singing 'Pieces of Me' from the Radio Version and her Live! performance from the Teen Choice Awards last weekend.

Its very hard to listen to her live. She is flat, her voice warbles, she runs out of breathe, can't hit a note. Its a wonder what studios can do to pitch correct a voice and make anyone sound good.

That is just sad.

By the way, I've heard four of the songs off of her CD and they are all forgetable.

I think it's because people are fascinated by her giant beak. The girl has a Karl Malden thing going on.

The big deal is that since the record industry has proven that they follow "trends" and don't take the time to develop new artists that actually have the slightest glimmer of talent, they try to mimic instead of creating. And when they fail, downloading or the "internet" is to blame. The music industry is becoming VERY disposable. And it has nothing to do with the common gripes - "they don't write their own songs" or "they can't play any instruments".

Sadly, yes. Yes they are.

I have heard the Cd. It is indeed pure crap. Bad melodies, bad singing, bad songwriting, bad everything. Blech!!! Yet the cracker spawn will eat it up.
It's a damn shame.

the complaint is non-unique. Crappy pop music has always been around. Successful crappy pop music has always been there. It's not like it's getting worse or going away. It just seems that way. We're just giving them more attention.

While i'm sure most people won't admit it we have all at some point purchased music of this nature. Whether or not it was in the 80's, 90's, etc. Simpson, Spears, Timberlake are just this Generations Tiffany, M.C. Hammer, whatever.

It's very simple.

"Pieces of Me" is a hot as hell song. Most record buyers purchased albums based on 1 song they hear off the radio.

Which is why you see multiple copies of old "hit" records at used cd stores.

I can tolerate Ashlee Simpson's music way more than Britney Spears.
