Peter Gabriel - where to go from 3?
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov...87687q2htv.jpg
I recently picked up, listened to, and fell in love with Peter Gabriel's "3" / "Melt" / whatever. A real gem that I can't believe I never heard before. Breathtaking stuff. In any case, where would fans (if there are any here) of his recommend I go next? It seems like he may be a little too poppy for my tastes nowadays, but I actually enjoy some of his stuff from "So" as well. I'm looking into the first two albums as well. Opinions on those? What about "Security"? And finally, is there anyone who thinks I should check out some Gabriel era Genesis in addition to this stuff? |
2, 1, Security, stop.

So and US are exceptional - as his his debut!!!!
For the kicker - get both the live DVDs for some stunning live shows!!!! T |
That is such a great recording. It's one of a kind as well. You won't find another just like it, but even so I'd check out "Security".
The one with "Shock the Monkey" on it. Even though "So" is his biggest, that's where I'd go after that. |
If you prefer his less "commercial" stuff (for lack of a better term), pick up anything/everything from his first album through Security. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with anything he has put out. I'm sure that you would be interested in the early Genesis releases as well, before Phil Collins steered them in a more commercial direction after PG's departure.

I would add Genesis The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Not his solo stuff, but still great.

Yep--3 or "Melt" might just be his best ever work...and the original record label rejected it as 'too risky'
It's all good with Peter...even his last album UP was severely slept on, it's a grower. My least favorite of his is US but even that has some incredible material on it. And I second the Gabriel-era Genesis stuff, it was brilliant. Too bad no one seems to know about it because of their later commercial hugeness under Collins. |

Why not try "Melt" again, this time in German? :D

I agree with the Security recommendations. Love love love that album--one of my all time favorites.
I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them though. I was one of the seemingly few people that really liked UP even. I agree with Jepthah, it was slept on. It didn't hook me on the first listen, but by the third time through, I was definately on board. |

Actually, the German language adds a whole new level of mystery to many of his songs, like "Intruder" ("Eindringling") or "The Family And The Fishing Net" ("Das Fischernetz"). |
His soundtracks are amazing....give either "Passion" or "Long Walk Home" a try....
