I could keep going if you want. :) I tried to stick with bands that still exist, but there's tons of good stuff from bands that are no more.

Several of these bands have been played on wb dramas and the o.c., which is good and bad. Good that the word is spreading about these great bands, bad that they might get signed to big corporate labels. Don't let bad tv keep you from great music. :)

calla (as previously mentioned, smart ambient post rockish but not too post, with smooth vocals)
lake trout (imagine richard patrick from filter singing with dj shadow with guitar)
the white octave (broke up, ex cursive member, really emo but sincere)
the national skyline (ex hum member, kinda spacey and sad)
poor rich ones (norwegian band, broke up...more spacey sad music)

Jonatha Brooke

One of my top artists. She has a great voice and songs are farily deep/personal to her. She doesn't get any radio play and puts out her records on her own lable.

Previously, she was part of a duet called The Story.

She is considered a Folk singer in most record stores that carry her cds, but I think she fits in with Rock as well.

Her webpage allows you to listen to samples of her work.

If you have seen the Disney movie Return to Neverland, she sang the song I'll Try.
She has also had a song featured on a Dawson's Creek episode.

This post makes me want to cry. We had a local (non college station) that all of these bands were on regular rotation. Sadly, like the Colts leaving Baltimore, the station was changed mid-day from a great Alternative station (almost an oxymoron in OK) to a damn Tejas channel.


I wiould also recomend StellaStarr* (the band) and the Chainsaw Kittens (and Tyson Meade's solo stuff).

Damn! They're still around? I remember partying with them back in '90 or so!

I'd have to say that the Wildhearts are the best band I know of that no one (in the US) has heard of. The main songwriter is one of the best I've ever heard. Out of the 150 or so songs I've heard, only about 3 are bad. This band is so good, that I made a "best of" cassette where I only wanted the songs that I could hear over and over and over again, and that turned out to be a 3 hour taping session. The Wildhearts got super loud guitars, crunching, catchy riffs, and amazing harmonies.

Ocean Colour Scene

They've been around for almost 15 years and have about 8 albums (only one album was a hit, and that was only in the UK). They're everything from rock to pop to folk and everything in between. They kinda sound like the Beatles, but with more of an edge. They absolutely ROCK live - one of the tightest and best sounding live bands I've ever heard - they sound even better live than on record. Most of their stuff is only available on import - that's why there's amazon.uk.

I think you can hear clips of songs on their web-site.

Sorry - I didn't know... I just searched on google and mtv.com came up. Mtv2 is different from Mtv. Just because a band has professional music videos doesn't mean they aren't obscure.
