So what's the story behind "Little Wing"?

I have three versions of the song(Jimmy, SRV, The Corrs) and have read the lyrics. I like it and think I will only continue to appreciate it. I gather it was written as a song for Jimmy to his daughter, but I am also seeing it mentioned in the "Songs You Want Played at Your Funeral" thread.

Is there more of a story behind the song?

Positively beautiful song. Didn't Sting cover it as well?
I'd give my left nut to hear Lewis Taylor's live version of this one...

There's a Pearl Jam live cut with the most amazing jam flowing out of little wing. Leave you breathless.

Damn, I'd love to hear that, and I'm not even a PJ fan...
Is it on any official release?

i believe it was a 'bonus track' on a 7/11/95 bootleg.. the Little Wing > Maggot Brain was actually played at the previous show (7/9/95)..

note: this was before the 'official bootlegs'.
