Another Request For Wedding Songs...Sort Of

I have seen similar threads here before, but I am looking for a couple of specific categories. I am not so much looking for songs during the reception itself, but I am looking for suggestions for the first dance song. We do have a song, but I am more interested in getting a song that is not well known and not played to death. Of course, it has to be a ballad and fit the occassion, but I couldn't care less about anything else such as genre, artist, etc.

Also looking for some suggestions for father type songs, since my father passed away a number of years ago, and I thought that it would be nice to have a song dedicated to him during the reception.

Any serious suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

At my best friends' wedding last month, their first dance was to "At Last" (Etta James), which is their song. Classy and not overly played out.

"Woman" by Anti-Nowhere League

Gotta love The Dan Band!

The most romantic ballad I know is "How Can I Tell You" by Cat Stevens (From TEASER AND THE FIRECAT"). It may be a little TOO quiet and slow for the first dance, however...might be good for the suite afterwards, though!

How about "Luckiest" by Ben Folds. I guess you either like his style of music, or you think its too whiney. I think it is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. In any case, I'd take a listen and see what you think. I know of a couple of people who used/are using it as their first song.

My wife and I used "Taking you Home" by Don Henley.

I suggest "If I Should Fall Behind" by Bruce Springsteen.
Great song and not overplayed.

Totally agree. Great song. Especially for a wedding.

 My wife and I used that song in our wedding video. One of our favorite songs - beautiful piece of music.

My fiance rejected Neil Young's "After The Goldrush" based on content, but it's a beautiful song. The Pretender's "I'll Stand By You" is a great tune, but it currently carries a bit of Dawson's Creek stank on it. "Into Your Arms" by Nick Cave is one I'm contemplating, along with Brad's "Those Three Words" off the Interiors album. I love the song "Life's Little Ups And Downs" originally by Charlie Rich, but his version is too country, and I can't find a clean enough version of it that the Jayhawks do live.

"Forever" by KISS

Great suggestions (for the most part) ;)

Keep'em coming!

Any father songs suggestions to add?

The wedding song that my wife and I danced to a few months ago was "This is the Night", by Clay Aiken. We're both AI fans, and thought he should have won.

And speaking of the Dan Band (as mentioned earlier in the thread), I saw them in NYC a few weeks ago, and they rocked!

I love Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald singing together:
Love is Here to Stay
Nearness of You
Cheek to Cheek

Louis Armstrong:
A Kiss to Build a Dream On and I know this may be played a lot but there's nothing like his What a Wonderful World

Ella solo's: I Love You for Sentimental Reasons

Can't think of any more off the top of my head... :)

A friend of mine used this as "their" song. The most beautiful song I have ever heard.

My wife and I each chose one and we had two songs:

Then I kissed her - the Beach Boys
Grow Old With Me - Mary Chapin Carpenter

This is the MOST overplayed song at weddings. Great song, but please don't think it's "Not played out".

I posted the same comments on a thread here at least a year or two ago as well.

I'm sorry, I can't resist.

How about "Erotic City" - Prince?

If I had the guts I woulda played that one for my wedding. :D

Man, the looks we'd get ....

Cyberock 08-03-04 09:51 AM

my wife and I chose "I want to grow old with you" by Adam Sandler. That got a laugh.

Annoyumous 08-03-04 03:24 PM

Van Morrison - Someone Like You

If you're into more non traditional songs, I really think Just Like Heaven by The Cure is an awesome song for a wedding, perhaps not so much lyrically as it is musically. Some other more non traditional ones I can think of are There She Goes by the La's (not the crappy Six Pence None the Richer cover) and Until She Comes by the Psychedelic Furs.
Another good one that is a bit less out there, is Angels by Robbie Williams. When I first heard it I immediately thought "this could be a great wedding song some day".

Hey guys,
Thanks for all of the suggestions. We are starting to lean towards When You Say Nothing At All by Keith Whitley and/or Allison Krauss, although we are definitely going to use some of the songs suggested above at the reception.

One of the very last songs that John Lennon wrote was recently covered by a country artist. It's a ballad called "Grow Old With Me". If anyone knows the artist who recently sang it, that would be a big help.

The answer to this question is "shining star" (Jerry Garcia Band Cover)

But none of you fuckers use it, cause it's mine.

Dansize 09-03-04 04:18 PM

True Companion - Marc Cohn

I Love to See You Smile - Randy Newman (On the Parenthood Soundtrack) - This is a good father/daughter piece.
