Backup CDs
 

Do you backup your music CDs? In otherwords, copying them so you have a backup copy.

I usually only use my copies when I go traveling.

My ritual is to buy a CD, rip it, put the original on the shelf and leave it there.

I back up my cds also, i keep the originals at home and use the copies in my car...i've had my car broken into before and lost a ton of cds.

I'm thinking about doing this. It just seems so tedious. Maybe I'll just do the ones I actively listen to.

For the car, since I don't have an in-dash MP3 player yet, I always burn the disc and would never take the original unless it's a short trip somewhere and I might want to take the CD with me say, into work. I've had too many $$$ discs slide off the seat and get scratched or get stolen - copies play just fine and you can always make another.

I have an MP3 player in my vehicle so I rip to MP3 and save to disc, then put the original on the shelf. I have a 12 year old who has discovered AC/DC and he plays their stuff daily; 12 year olds are NOT notorious for being careful. When he gets a new CD I make a copy of it, archive it, and hand him back the original. If he destroys it along the way then I just make him a new one so he doesn't need to go and buy all over again. In any case once I buy something and decide I want to travel with it, I make a copy rather than take the original along....as inexpensive as blanks are these days it would be silly not to. Buying one replacement CD costs more money than a stack of 50, easily.

I've never made a backup copy for protection. I've got original discs all over my car (glove compartment, under the seat, in the arm rest). The one time my car was broken into my stereo was gone and the discs remained. Of course, CDs can be an advertisement to whoever is looking in your car.

I've been considering doing this for my OOP and hard to find discs. It'd be a nightmare to have hunt all of that stuff down and pay for it all again.

My problem is storage space. I've got 1,500+ CDs. If I made back-ups of them all (which I wouldn't since there are plenty that I rarely listen to), there goes even more space. How do you guys store them? Slimline cases? Keep them on a spindle?

I just consolidated all of my Tori Amos non-album tracks to several CDs. Now, they're backed up, and I don't have to risk ruining any rare OOP import singles just to hear 2 or 3 songs. Plus, now that the songs are now collected together in groups of 15-20 songs per CD it's like I have a whole bunch of brand new Tori Amos albums to listen to.

I may have to try this out with other artist I have rare singles and EPs for, but I also own well over 1500 CDs and doing this for all of them would be impossible, both in terms of time and space.

Well, I convert mine to MP3, but for some the quality isn't as great. I honestly can't tell the difference between an MP3 at a 192 bitrate and a CD. Figure you can get on average at least 100 songs on a CD-R that way, and over 700 songs on a DVD-R. If you got a 120 gig backup harddrive you could probably almost fit 1500+ CDs that way.

I do agree if the original cd hasn't been harmed in anyway 192/256/320 really is cd-quality. On your pc anyway, I dont think it sounds as good in mp3 devices.

Ill openly admit I have hundreds of mp3 albums on cd waititng to be bought.. and alot that I cant even find.. which sucks.

But I have about 40gb of my cds backed up all in 192, im planning on getting an 80 or 120 gb hdd for back up soon, at which point ill start encoding to 320.

On the whole backing up is a good idea.. personally i trust my HDD more then discs that can get scratched up.. (as many of my back ups have already!!)

I dont listen to music much away from the pc anyway.

Yeah you could say that. I have about 10 copies of each Green Day main CD (1039, Dookie, Kerplunk, Insomniac, ect.).


Everytime I see a used GD CD for sale I have to "rescue" it.

i make 2 albums into one if they are short enough (the two big rush albums, rubber soul and revolver)

For the car, I do.

In the event that heat damages them, some ******* steals them, or they get damaged. I can live with losing a bunch of five-cent CD-Rs, but I'd hate to replace twenty or more original CDs.
