New Rhino 80's box coming

Looks interesting:

Rhino Records will release Left of the Dial: Dispatches from the '80s Underground on October 5th. The four-disc compilation includes tracks from such alternative-rock pioneers as the Replacements, Minor Threat, Husker Du, the Jam, the Smiths, R.E.M. and Sonic Youth.
Included are interviews with Greg Ginn and Peter Jesperson, founders of influential indie-rock labels SST and Twin/Tone respectively, as well as reflections on the era from Manchester scenemaker Tony Wilson and Dream Syndicate frontman Steve Wynn.

DIY punks like the Dead Kennedys and Black Flag were at the forefront of the movement and largely labored outside the reach of the limelight, while artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the recently split Jane's Addiction were able to capitalize on the momentum of the wave created by the earlier groups.

At the time of Jane's Addiction recent split, singer Perry Farrell furnished an epitaph for the band, that could easily have doubled for the groups that helped bring punk and alternative to the mainstream. "She laid a foundation for unbridled underground music to rise up on," Farrell told Rolling Stone. "The newly coined 'alternative music' came on to replace a stale music scene. We encouraged people to make scary choices."

Excellent track listing. I'm not much for compilations, but I admit I may consider picking this one up.

Great idea. I actually wrote to Rhino a few weeks ago suggesting they do a Nuggets-type comp of just 80's bands (Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, Plasticland, etc.). I'd still like to see a box like that that is a bit more genre specific. While I could slightly nitpick with a few of their song choices, this looks like a killer box for people who want to discover a few of these bands.

- the above is a handy guide to Hiro11's high school musical purchases.

I'd buy this is I didn't already own almost every single album these songs are on.

Who am I kidding, I'm going to buy it anyway.

ChrisKnudsen 07-14-04 08:40 PM

Jesus this is amazing. This is essential

ChrisKnudsen 07-14-04 08:43 PM

They should also make a volume two to this and make another No Thanks box set.

Numanoid 07-15-04 10:22 PM

Awesome. New Wave RULES!!!

Buford T Pusser 07-15-04 11:15 PM

Hmmm. For some reason I'm not dying to get this one.

I have quite a few of those songs and the ones that I don't have I probably don't need.

Flashback 07-30-04 01:34 PM

Holiday in Cambodia...by DK...I love that song.

Pretty decent set for people (like me) who still have these on ratty cassettes  Not bad.

So, what's missing?

Discuss.

El-Kabong 08-02-04 11:29 AM

So - does anyone have an idea on how much this sucker is gonna be? I cant find it for pre-order anywhere yet.
