Black Crowes are highly underrated..(The appreciation thread)
I may sound a bit biased because I am also a big soul fan, Otis, Aretha etc. But personally i feel that The Black Crowes are one of the most underrated bands around and never got the full recognition they deserved. I think Chris Robinson has one of the most amazing soulful voices that our rock generation ever encountered. Perhaps of the alternative scene that came on in the early 90's neglected them from becoming world famous as say..Led Zepplin. Amazing band but wrong decade.
I never listened to any bands that was able to blend in rock, soul, and blues together so successfully as they did with amazing lyrics to boot. I wonder how they would be received if they popped up in the early 70's insted of the early 90's. Now that they are on hiatus, any many of their web sites gone and not many threads regarding them. I thought i would snap a little (hey remember the black crowes!:)) I am sure many won't agree with me. But that's ok. To each it's own. I think I'm going to listen to a little Sister Luck. Feel free to comment. |
I totally agree - I didn't like them at first. Their first album didn't really do much for me when if first came out.
But their second album knocked me on my ass, as did their third album - their other albums were good too, but they peaked with their second and third releases. Chris put out an ok solo-album and Rich is supposed to be doing some project with the guys from Space Hog. |
You're reference to Led Zep couldn't be more spot on. You must be aware of their "Live at the Greek" set with Page? Great stuff. Also, I think the song "Heavy" sounds like a lost Zep tune - all the better for the Crowes (and this big Zep fan) :) The box set is cool too as it contains bonus tracks and a live disc not available elsewhere IIRC.

It would have been impossible for the Crowes to have been around in the early 70's because a big chunk of their sound is imitation. They needed those other bands to show them the connect-the-dots formula. Yes, these are one of the few bands I wish was NOT from my city (along with Collective Soul).

I liked their first couple albums. Always felt their albums were too varied and uneven. For example, I liked half their songs on the album Lions, and absolutely hated the other half. But having said that, they got a good number of tunes that really cook.

I agree too. Didn't like them at first, but they grew on me. Their last album (the one with "Go Faster" on it) was great!

Underrrated by who?
They've always enjoyed their kudos. I remember years ago they were saying TBCs was "band's band". |
It is true that the sound element are from bands such as Faces, Led Zepplin, The Rolling Stones. etc But what band doesn't have influences of past bands.
My take is media wise you won't hear them under the same breath as Led,Stones,Van Halen, Mettalica and so forth. I am not trying to prove a point because there is no point. Only a matter of opinion and that is mine. My first take on them when i first heard them was wow....these are real talented musicans and thought wow.. TBC will be the band for the 90's ..............until the whole Seattle scene came in. |

Basically when alternative rock took over. But not just them but many others, especially holdovers from the 80's rock faded away. But even if it didn't. Your right perhaps the crowes wouldn't even make the top 50, hence the thread title. But like i said, this is just my feelings on the band and how i feel how good they are and the greatness i thought they would or could achieve. It's ok if you completely disagree. I respect your opinion. |
I think that the reason they were overlooked was because their sound wasn't "modern" enough - whatever the hell that means. But if you look past their esthetics, you would see that they have really good lyrics, song writing and melodies, not to mention the pure talent to pull it all off seamlessly. People just got caught up by their "retro" sound and couldn't look past it and enjoy some really good songs by a really good band.

How were they overlooked? They always got tons of airplay.

I actually really liked their first album, their second wasn't too bad and i didn't hear anything else by them until i picked up By Your Side which i thought was horrible.
|
I don't know much of their stuff, but always thought Chris Robinson should eat something.
|
Lead?
|
Okay, sorry, that was uncalled for.
|
A nice, big salad.

(I was referring to a pencil above, btw.)

I got completely ignored.
