who knows Adam Ant?

Just finished listening to The Essential Adam Ant today. i was unfamiliar with any of his work, aside from "Goody Two Shoes". i really really liked what i heard, save for a couple later tracks which reminded me of over-produced phil collins.

can anyone reccommend where to start with his albums?

I will unabashedly admit to being a huge fan. I think the essential recordings of his are Kings of the Wild Frontier, Prince Charming and his solo album Friend or Foe.

I know their past work is often dismissed as a total new wave joke act, but there was a huge degree of creativity in this band, IMO. The Burundi/tribal drumming, the punk/rockabilly guitars, the heavy film influencees (westerns, pirate movies, etc.), and just a LOT of really catchy, strange, edgy, rocking songs.

You may also be interested in checking out the works of Bow Wow Wow---Malcolm McLaren, who was the manager of Adam and the Ants (and the Sex Pistols) basically stole all of "The Ants" away from Adam, and then put a 14 year old girl singing in front of them---a lot of the same tribal beats and guitar playing, and some very cool songs.

strong agreement.

I have their cd before those and it's much rougher, plus the later stuff.

They were a fun band and the guitarist Marco did a good job.

Add me in as well. "Kings... " and "Friend or Foe" are very strong albums. I'm not really a NIN fan, but Trent did a cover of "Physical (You're So)".

Ky-Fi, I'm your echo! Gotta go with Bow Wow Wow as well. Pick up their '96 Best of collection. What a fantastic batch of songs.

Yep, that best-of collection rocks. I still feel that "Do You Want to Hold Me?" is just about the most perfect new wave single ever recorded.

Long time Ant fan here. Even have the Antics In The Forbidden Zone video collection on laserdisc.

Definite must-owns are those mentioned, though there are some treasures on all of their/his albums. Also, see if you can find the album B-Side Babies. Great, great stuff on that...some of his best tracks were b-sides.

It was cool for me to hear that CD for the first time last year... there were many songs I'd never heard before on that disc. "Where's My Snake?" is very good.

I'm the echo of YOUR echo. I may be stuck in the '80s, but I still enjoy Adam Ant and Bow Wow Wow as well.

I didn't want to start a new thread on this, but since some new wave fans are jumping in you might like to know that season 2 of VH1 Bands Reunited will feature ABC, the Motels and Haircut 100.
That's what is known for now. I think the Thompson Twins are a rumor at this point. I really like "Pelican West" from Haircut and think Nick Heyward's solo albums are incredible.

I think this will air in the fall.

Groucho 06-28-04 08:34 AM

I know Adam Ant. He cleans my pools on Thursdays.
