The Smith's "How Soon Is Now?" Rocks

Listening to Singles today...I love this song. It absolutely rocks.

That's all I wanted to say :)

tonyc3742 06-08-04 03:50 PM

I agree :)
That is one of my favorite, nostalgia-inducing, mope-at-the-universe type songs.
Although the first time I heard that dance song that sampled the opening sounds, I almost got an embolism.

SomeVoices 06-08-04 04:07 PM

It does indeed. I remember heaing that song on the radio when I was younger every once in awhile, about age 12, and thinking how cool it was. But it took me years before I found out the name and who sang it. I think it may have been when the Wedding Singer came out.

atlantamoi 06-08-04 04:11 PM

Yeah, I remember hearing that song in the summer of '85 for the first time and thinking how utterly unique and BIG it sounded. I still think it's one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

Except for the really cool tremelo guitar effect, I think it's one of the more overrated Smiths songs. Too long and Morrissey isn't mean enough on it. Also the drum part gets really annoying after about four minutes....IMO

I'll take This Charming Man, Hand in Glove, Still Ill, William, It Was Nothing, Boy With the Thorn in his Side, Panic etc...

Also, I heard it in several commercials, it's officially overplayed.

  couldn't agree more. IMO it is one of the worst Smiths songs. It does not have Morrisseys great lyrics, nor does it showcase Marr's amazing talent as a guitar player.

Granted it is a Smiths song so it is 99% better than anything else out there. :)

For the longest time, I thought this song was by Depeche Mode.

WestEndRiot 06-08-04 09:40 PM

Everclear and Quicksand both do covers of this song and both are exceedingly better than the original.

Saxofonix 06-08-04 11:41 PM

The merits of "How Soon is Now" was recently under discussion

Nabalab 06-09-04 12:14 AM

I've always preferred "Hippy Chick" by Soho, which has an *almost* identical riff as "How Soon Is Now".

As do Love Spit Love, Snake River Conspiracy, and T.A.T.U., but I still prefer the original over all others.

Classic song. When I first heard it, was a musically close-minded youngster into rap/hip hop and this song was one of the first tunes that really opened me up to Brit/U.K stuff. Thank God!

However, if my memory is correct, the video was one of the worst things I've ever seen.

I've always placed a cool sounding song or bit of a song above "talent". Whether Marr's talent was in full force or not, that tremelo effect during the first few seconds is one of my fave moments in rock.

LiquidSky 06-09-04 07:37 AM

One of my all-time favorite songs!

Not to be a jerk or anything, but they sound nothing alike. Vocals or music. You thinking of another song? ;)

There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home
And you cry
And you want to die

whynotsmile 06-09-04 10:10 AM

yep. other great SMITHS songs:

ask

panic

heaven knows im misserable now

charming man

danganet 06-09-04 10:41 AM

Snake River Conspiracy did a good remake back in 2000.
Female vocals and an alt radio hit.

Gil Jawetz 06-09-04 10:44 AM

And of course the Craft/Charmed theme by Love Spit Love (?)

Still, not as good as the original.

Great band. And great album too. Whatever happened to them?

TripWire 06-09-04 11:49 AM

as far as I know the second album from SRC is already recorded, just waiting to be released.

Great, great song. Haven't been a real fan of any of the covers.
