Tomahawk - Mit Gas - Whoa. (Mike Patton is amazing)
 

I'm always behind the times when it comes to music, discovering albums a year or two after they're released. So for me, getting an album only a year after it's released is not bad at all.

This album is just stunning. I spent the first day rocking with "Rape this day" on non-stop repeat and never really got tired of it. It sounds (to me) like a parody of the foo fighters songs and commercialism (think the Beatles making fun of the Beach Boys with "Back in the USSR"), except it rocks harder than any foo fighters song i can think of... and I kind of like the foo fighters. Patton nails Grohl's type of lyrics and even sounds like him. Change the title to "Make this day" and play it on the radio as a foo fighters song and every teenager would buy this album :)

is the whole album tomahawk's take on other bands' songs? "aktion F1413" sounds like a pretty obvious take on radiohead's "fitter, happier." "birdsong" sounds like Tool at times to me.

Not sure how many others here have this album, but if so have you noticed any other similarities, or am i simply insane?

Great album... You should pick up their first release as well, if you don't already have it. And yeah, Patton is the man... Although the last Fantomas album still has me scratching my head and wondering WTF...

Mike Patton just seems to do whatever he feels like doing--which must be really cool. I need to check out some of his other albums. I really got into Faith No More when King for a Day was released--they played the whole album on the radio while I was in the car and I stopped at a record store and bought it on the way home! I also really like Lovage, although it's quite a change of pace from his usual work. I had heard a bit of Fantomas' stuff and wasn't sure what to make of it--I'll check out the first Tomahawk album.

Their first disc is every bit as good as Mit Gas is...

Fantomas - You need to check out "The Director's Cut". That's an absolutely stunning album. The other two though... A little <i>too</i> experimental for my taste. "Fantomas" is a series of 30 second to a minute or two bursts of noise. "Delirium Cordia" is one track, 74 minutes in length, comprised of short bursts of noise and ambiance... Like a soundtrack for the criminally insane, that's the best way that I can describe it. Neither of those CDs get a lot of spin time for me but "The Director's Cut" is incredible.

Of course... You need all 3 Mr. Bungle releases. Friggin' amazing those are. Bungle rules all.

I'm not into the Fantomas stuff, but I'm a huge Bungle and Faith No More fan. I liked the fist Tomahawk but haven't heard the second yet. I'll have to check it out.

You might want to check out "Irony Is a Dead Scene" from "Dillinger Escape Plan"

Yes, you must get the first record as well. Bungle and Fantomas as well, all equally amazing.

You also might want to check out his solo stuff. "Adult Themes For Voice" is just Mike in hotel rooms with a microphone and a 4-track. This one is even stranger than Fantomas for me. Then there's "Pranzo Oltranzista" which is mainly an instrumental album with jazz musicians. John Zorn is on it as well. All good stuff. I saw Mr. Bungle live on Snowcore in 1999 I believe. It was awesome, it's a shame that the're no longer together.

Yeah, that too... It's a 4 track EP but it's great... Patton vocals.

glasschicken - I dig Pranzo Oltranzista OK but Adult Themes... Yeah, I agree, bizarre doesn't even begin to describe that bit of experimentation. But, since the OP really digs the Tomahawk CD, it's probably best to steer clear of the solo experimental stuff until he's fully explored the more "traditonal" material... Ya know? Those solo albums are pretty far "out there". ;)

I agree. I only got Adult themes after the first Fantomas and seeing them live. Kind of had an idea of what I was getting into, but not really. Still waiting for the Peeping Tom album to come out. It's supposed to be the most mainstream Pattons been since FNM.
