This Week's CDs -- What's Playing? (5/17-5/21, et al)

The Thrills - So Much For The City
Matthew Sweet - In Reverse
The Beatles - 1
The New Pornographers - Electric Version
John Linnell - State Songs

Question of the Day: What's the worst CD you've ever bought? I say "bought" because I'm setting this wholly arbitrary rule that it's unfair to slag an album you received as a gift from a clueless relative or borrowed from the library. No, you need to have actually shelled out cash for this.

Answer of the Day: You know, I bought Modest Mouse's The Moon And Antarctica on the basis of some generally favorable comments here and elsewhere. And it was not to my taste at all. It's not necessary a bad album, but it's rare that I decide to sell an album after 2 listens, and this qualified. (Needless to say, I'm not going to go out and buy Good News...;))

Here's today's list:

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Fleetwood Mac - Very Best of
Nirvana - Bleach
Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape
Cure - Wish

Gdrlv 05-17-04 04:19 PM

Ween - Live: Paintin' the Town Brown
Ween - Live in Chicago
Ween - 12 Golden Country Greats
The Gift of Gab - 4th Dimensional Rocket Ships Going Up
Patterson Hood - Killers and Stars
moe. - Warts and All Vol. 2

AOTD: Tough question...I buy too much to really define the "worst" album I've ever purchased. The last album I bought and just hated was D-d-don't Stop the Beat by Junior Senior.

Sorry you hated Moon and Antarctica SAShepard. That's one of my favorite discs...

Quake1028 05-17-04 04:44 PM

Usher - Confessions
The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
D-12 - D-12 World
Aesop Rock - Bazooka Tooth

fallow 05-18-04 12:43 AM

The Human League, Dare LP
Pere Ubu, New Picnic Time LP
PiL, Album LP
Kno, White Albulum CD
ZE Records, Mutant Disco compilation 2xCD
Sonic Youth, Dirty re-issue 4xLP
Faun Fables, Family Album CD
Angels of Light, Everything is Good Here/Please Come Home CD
Gastr Del Sol, Camoufleur CD

I finally got a turntable around the same time that I found this GREAT used record store in my hometown so I'm spinning a lot of records.

AoTD: Most recently, the Van Hunt self-titled album. I thought it was great at first, even posted a thread on it here, but now I can hardly stand it. I need to get rid of the damn thing. Also, discounting the myriad Fat Wreck Chords albums haunting my past, Smog's Accumulation: None. Not to pick a fight with any Bill Callahan fans on here, but I really, completely, wholeheartedly despise Smog.

DJLinus 05-18-04 11:28 AM

Morrissey - You Are the Quarry
Robbie Williams - Swing When You're Winning
Atmosphere - God Loves Ugly
Atmosphere - Seven's Travels
Franz Ferdinand - s/t
Bryan Ferry - Slave to Love: The Best of the Ballads
Loudon Wainwright III - The Last Man on Earth

Should arrive in the mail this week:
v/a - Okay Player Presents True Notes Vol. One
Cut Chemist/DJ Shadow - Product Placement CD/DVD

Need to pick up from the library:
v/a - The Ladykillers soundtrack
v/a - Underworld soundtrack

AotD: I'd have to say Depeche Mode's Songs of Faith and Devotion Live. I absolutely love the studio album, but this one just sucks. It sounds exactly like the studio album, only with crowd noise and Dave Gahan adding a few "Yeahs" here and there. Luckily, I got it from the cut-out bin and it was under $5, I think.

Tuesday's Picks:

Sponge - Rotting Pinata (now I know what this was "rotting" on my shelf)
Stevie Wonder - Definitive Collection
Moby - Play

Garbage

Chris Watson- Weather Report

Very cool disc of nature/field recordings from Kenya; Scotland; and Iceland. It's almost like "time-lapse" photography, condensing hours or months of recordings into 18 minute pieces that show the effects of weather and climate on the locations. It's not music in any real sense, but if you're a fan of the label that put this out (Touch), you're probably more into "audio" than what's predefined as "music." Hope that didn't sound too pretentious. :)

Raster-Noton - (o)acis box

Raster-Noton is the record label. It's a box set of 4 EPs by Noto, Byetone, Komet and COH. Minimalist electronics/"microhouse."

Kaffe Matthews - Cd Eb and Flo

Electronic improv using altered therimin sounds via a laptop.

Wipers - Youth of America

I love this band so much. You'd think that since Nirvana covered a few of their songs they'd have a platinum album or something. Sadly, I don't think I've ever even met anyone who listens to them.

Love- Forever Changes

I don't really own many rock albums recorded before 1974 for some reason, but when one of the handful I have is this one, it's ok I guess. We're talking Top 10 Ever material here.

AOTD- A really tough question since, amazingly, I can't recall ever buying anything that's disappointed me to the point of where I had to get rid of it. I guess I'd have to go with Metallica's St. Anger as the worst thing I've paid for. Those goes my cred. ;)

Starlover 05-19-04 12:56 PM

Morrissey- You Are the Quarry
The Streets- A Grand Don't Come for Free
The Secret Machines- Now Here is Nowhere

I just got the Devin Dazzle & the Neon Fever promo in the mail. I've only listened to the collab with James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem ("What She Wants") and it thumps for sure. I'll be sure to post how good the rest of it is.

please do, I would be very interested in your thoughts on this release.

Giles 05-24-04 10:14 PM

psst.. fallow, did you give the Felix da Housecat CD a listen? I have it on hold at Olsson's and I want to buy it after work. (a penny for your thoughts)

The June issue of Uncut gives it four stars, and that's enough praise for me to buy, but I'd love to read your opinion on it as well.

fallow 05-25-04 01:32 PM

I listened to the whole thing once and certain songs a couple times. I think it's pretty good, though I wouldn't call it an essential 2004 album-- mainly because the second half seems so much better than the first. There are only a couple songs that I feel the need to skip and that's because they come too close to the clinical part of electroclash I hate so much (note: I think Adult. can pull this off wonderfully, so you may differ). (I assume you already know that this album is his 80s fixation?) My favorite tracks are the ones that draw from The Human League and 10cc: "Ready 2 Wear," "Let Your Mind Be Your Bed," "Nina," "Devin Dazzle," and "Neon Human."
