Looking for depressing songs, hehe
I'm looking for depressing songs, dunno why, I just like them sometimes. What do I mean by depressing? Gary Jules - "Mad World", Rufus Wainwright - "Hallelujah." Things like that. Any ideas? Thanks a lot! And no, I don't need a psychologist (= .

I really like both tracks you've mentioned. Please seek out "You Can Never Leave" by Crooked Fingers...you should love it. In fact, you'll probably love all their stuff, but their last album (Red Devil Dawn) is one of the finest pieces of music to be released in '03.

You should definitely check out Dakota Suite - my favourite band for depressing music. Especially their albums "Alone With Everybody", "Songs For A Barbed Wire Fence" and "The Way I Am Sick".
Won't get much mor depressing than this, IMO. Also, any Red House Painters or Elliot Smith album will do, too. |
I used to do this when i was really depressed. Something about the depressing music would bring me out of it sooner then doing nothing but wallowing in the misery.
Anways, some songs of choice for me were Something I can Never Have - NIN End - The Cure Prayers for Rain - The Cure I have more, but off the top of my head, those are the two. |
1 - "Child Psychology" - Black Box Recorder
I stopped talking when I was six years old I didn’t want anything more to do with the outside world I was happy being quiet But of course they wouldn’t leave me alone My parents tried every trick in the book From speech therapists to child psychologists They even tried bribery I could have anything’ as long as I said it out loud "ife is unfair’ kill yourself or get over it "ife is unfair’ kill yourself or get over it Of course this episode didn’t last forever I’d made my point and it was time to move on To peel away the next layer of deceit And see what new surprises lay in store My school report said I showed no interest ’A disruptive influence’ I felt sorry for them in a way And when they finally expelled me It didn’t mean a thing "ife is unfair’ kill yourself or get over it "ife is unfair’ kill yourself or get over it ’"At that time she stopped what she was doing’ she stopped playing... she stared’ she had the facial grimicing... and then the psychiatrist was saying’ "Julie’ Julie’ can you hear me" Can you open your eyes" Can you stick out your tongue"" And all of a sudden’ Julie struck out"’ The November when I came home the Christmas decorations were already up Spray on snow’ coloured flashing lights And an artificial tree that played Silent Night Over and over again My parents welcomed me with loving arms But within an hour were back at each others throats Normal’ happy childhood back on course Batteries not included "ife is unfair’ kill yourself or get over it "ife is unfair’ kill yourself or get over it "ife is unfair’ kill yourself or get over it "ife is unfair’ kill yourself or get over it 2 - "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" - The Smiths 3 - "No Danger" - Delgados _______________________ |
put any Mazzy Star album on and let Hope and David make you cry and blot out your pain with gin.
|
Korn - daddy
The subject matter alone is depressing as hell. |
I'd suggest anything by Pedro the Lion. For a quick fix, check out achilles-heel.net...it's a preview site for the upcoming album, and features streaming versions of many new songs (click on 'audio' and then 'more songs').
|
man, how could I have forgotten Pedro the Lion?
Primarily "Priests and Paramedics". |
Most songs from the third Big Star album, but particularly "Holocaust" and "Big Black Car". There are some prime cuts of Lou Reed's Berlin that will have you reaching for the straight razor in no time, too.
Oh, BTW - Giles, nice to see there's another Black Box Recorder fan around here. |

No love for <A HREF="http://www.popmatters.com/music/reviews/c/cohenleonard-field.html" target="_blanK">Leonard Cohen</a>?
 |
Check out Lisa Germano's entire music collection. My favorite album of her's, Happiness, is about anything but happiness.
If that's not depressing enough for you, you could always check out the Projekt record label and some of their bands like Black Tape For a Blue Girl, Love Spirals Downwards and Soulwhirlingsomewhere |
The Cardigans - Gran Turismo
has some songs with a pure innocence mixed with eternal sadness feel to em. Nina's voice is awesome. of course, Portishead is recommended as well. |
