the amazing DEERHOOF

Anyone know anything about the progressive, alternative band Deerhoof??

they have a handful of albums, most recently Apple O.

fallow 04-25-04 01:00 PM

Actually, their most recent album is Milk Man, released by Kill Rock Stars/5 Rue Christine on March 9th. ;)

I loooooove Deerhoof. (Not the last album so much.) As I look back on 2003 (just wait for the retrospective thread!!), I realize that Apple 'O was my favorite album of the year. I loved it longer than any of the others and still spin it regularly -- as opposed to The Rapture who I rarely listen to at all. (Still like 'em.)

Even better is their 2002 album, Reveille. It's blistering and completely disconnected; the only feeling or theme linking it together is that the entire album straddles the line between innocence and insanity.

Wotta band.

yeah, i download some stuff from each album and was blown away, so i am gonna buy some of their stuff for sure.

can't really compare Deerhoof to anyone else because they really don't sound like anyone else, a true original.

I love Deerhoof. My friend played me Milk Man and then I went out and bought all their albums. Amazing stuff.

[KeanuReeves] Whaaaaooh![KeanuReeves]

I swear to god I was just a few minutes away from creating a Deerhoof thread after listening to Milk Man twice last night.

Weird. Anyways terrific band, my favorite album of their would be Apple O, though the new one is pretty good too.

I would hardly call them progressive or alternative. More simply just "noise pop", at the record store I work at we put their stuff under "Rock".

Yeah, they're under rock, but so is The Boredoms, which is definitely a sheer noise band.

However, even at a place like Amoeba which has a dedicated experimental section, both Deerhoof and The Boredoms are under rock. Einsturzende Neubauten, however, are in experimental.

Not to hijack this thread, but I only think Boredoms were a sheer noise band in their early days. Vision Creation Newsun and Super Ae are much more jam-y.

I picked up Reveille, and wasn't really impressed - it was a very hard listen. Is this pretty indicative of their other stuff, or is there another album someone might suggest that's a bit easier to listen to? Thanks!

Apple 'O is much easier and better. Milk Man is perhaps their most melodic work to date but I think that it's pretty lousy. They're better when they aren't so scared of random noise, IMO.

Poink 04-28-04 08:08 PM

I have Apple 'O and think it's pretty damn good.

I'm replying to this 'cause they're playing in about and hour and a half and I'm thinking about going. It's been quite a while since I've seen a band play. I think The Unicorns were the last band I saw, and that was back in January. And there's been some damn fine shows (as usual, being Chicago and all).

I saw Erik Friedlander on cello last week, but that doesn't count since he's not a 'band.' ;) I actually skipped out on LCD Soundsystem last night, which probably woulda been sold out when I got there anyways.

If I were going to sample (or ahem d/l) a couple Deerhoof tracks, what would you recommend? I don't have a clue what they sound like.

fallow 05-23-04 02:30 AM

"L'amour Stories"
"Diamond Star Car"
"This Magnificent Bird Will Rise"
"Top Tim's Rubies"
"Frenzied Handsome, Hello!"
