Neil Young question

I can say I'm a relative newbie to his music: I love his Silver & Gold album as well as Greendale - what of his other albums will I like?

Harvest is his best selling album. Most people say that that one and On The Beach are his classics. I enjoy Zuma and Are You Passionate? as well.

On the Beach? That's a new one on me. I really like it, but I don't think I've ever heard it described as one of his classics...

The ones that spring to mind are:

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
After the Gold Rush
(my personal favorite)
Harvest
Tonight's the Night
Rust Never Sleeps

There are some others that I really like, too, especially Zuma and Time Fades Away.

some stated above...there are a few...

Tonight's the Night
Rust Never Sleeps
Ragged Glory
Zuma
Everybody Knows
On The Beach
Harvest

This was considered part of a 'set' with Time Fades Away and Tonight's the Night.

And if you're looking for a great concert DVD check out the Rust Never Sleeps DVD. One of the best concert DVD's out there and the Dolby 5.1 sound rocks.

I like your choices, but I also consider "On the Beach" to be one of his best.

I'd buy them this way:
1. After the Gold Rush- probably the definitive Neil Young album
2. Harvest- his most popular album and very accessible while still being excellent.
3. Rust Never Sleeps- great transition from the quieter stuff to ragin Crazy Horse material
4. Tonight's the Night- not as accessible as any of the above but might be his best.
5. Everyone Knows this is Nowhere- grunge starts here with Cinnamon Girl
6. Weld- a kick ass live set from the Ragged Glory tour

Live Rust is a very cool live album with most of the hits

I'm not usually one to recommend 'hits' packages, but your first stop should be Decade, the two cd (3 lp set) that spans his career from 67-78 or so. Most of the hits, along with (then) rarities, live tracks, etc.
If I could have only one Neil Young album, it'd be Decade...

From a purely songwriting aspect, Sleeps With Angels is an amazing album...however not an album for everyone.

I am definitely not a Neil Young expert, but I've always enjoyed Harvest Moon and find it in the same mood as Silver and Gold. I think I understand why Harvest is a classic, but I listen to Harvest Moon more often than Harvest. Definitely the mellow Neil, though.

You really can't go too wrong with any of Neil Young's albums from the late 60s through the late 70s. On the Beach is my favorite, too. Avoid ALL of his 80s output except maybe Freedom. Trust me on that.

I would agree with the exception of Hawks & Doves.
