Got this as a present from my mom for easter. Not a bad set for a one disc but........no Baba O'Riley!!!! What the f--k!

The new songs (19 & 20) are decent but not worth it if you already have everything else.

Oh well.....

Rypro 525 04-13-04 04:44 PM

return it, and get the 2 disc "ultimate" collection. it has more songs.

cungar 04-13-04 05:06 PM

I'm waiting for the remastered version followed by the SACD version followed by the...

It sure is a shame that bands that become "uncreative" need to resort to putting out 15 versions of greatest hits packages.
IMHO, they are ruining their legacy. The Doors, are another band (Manzarek's greed) doing the same thing.

deadlax 04-13-04 08:56 PM

I am sure every release of a Who "Greatest Hits" collection has the full go-ahead from the band. Or perhaps it's to support the family of Moon and Entwhistle.

Considering The Who have THREE of the greatest albums of the late 60's, early 70's, and one of the best live albums of all time, I'd pretty much give them free range to do whatever they please.

Hollowgen 04-14-04 02:01 AM

christ, why can't artists just release something that actually HAS all of the greatest songs on them? start with chart toppers, then fan favourites, and finally some important album tracks? bah.

Rivero 04-14-04 09:07 AM

damn, I love the Who but they got more hits packages then Nirvana has albums!

Nice re-writing of history there, trying to wipe out the existence of "Athena" and "Eminence Front", both from It's Hard. I actually prefer both songs to "Squeeze Box" and "You Better You Bet".

cungar 04-14-04 11:47 AM

Choosing songs that don't match your picks is "rewriting history"? Hypoerbole noted.

Josh-da-man 04-14-04 12:39 PM

The Who are apparently in a competition with KISS and Aerosmith to see which band can put out the most compilation albums.

It's not all that hyperbolic. Every other "studio" album The Who released is represented by at least one song. You can argue that A Quick One isn't either, but it was called "Happy Jack" in the States and had that song included.

I've seen this phenomenon before. The Clash have pretty much decided that Cut the Crap never existed. Tom Petty included nothing from his album Let Me Up I've Had Enough on his 'Greatest Hits' album, even though the single from that album, "Jamming Me", got a lot of radio play. I might just be really picky, and if I were compiling a 'best of' Who CD, there's a lot of 'hits' I'd leave out, but I've got a problem with artists releasing singles which become hits, and then a decade or two later they decide they don't like those songs anymore and try to get people to forget them.

cungar 04-15-04 04:39 PM

I think "Best of" should be just that. The Who went into serious decline musically in the late 70's. There are at least 10 songs on Quadrophenia and 5 on Who By Numbers that are better than anything they did after 1975.

DVD Josh 04-15-04 04:54 PM

How can this not have Baby O'Reilly?

I think there are at least three songs on The Who Sell Out that are better than "I Can See For Miles" (also from that album), but the point of a 'Best of' collection is to collect the best and best known tracks of an artist's career, or at least that's the normal purpose. "I Can See For Miles" was a hit single. So was "Athena". Both should be on the album, IMO.

I also think they're both very good songs, FWIW.

It's really long, would be my guess.

Have you guys heard "Relay"? It was never released on any studio album but appears on "30 Years of Maximum R&B". Good song.

I agree with some of you that the omission of Baba O'Riley was a bad move. And where the hell is "The Seeker"?! One of the all-time best rock songs in my opinion.

NEW BALTIMORE 04-17-04 07:24 PM

cool

wendersfan 04-17-04 09:21 PM

Just to be obstinate, I compiled an alternate 20 song Who 'Best Of':

01 Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere
02 The Ox
03 A Legal Matter
04 Circles
05 Pictures of Lily
06 I'm Free
07 Sparks
08 Relay
09 Boris the Spider
10 Mary Anne With the Shaky Hands
11 Join Together
12 Pure and Easy
13 Naked Eye
14 Long Live Rock
15 Slip Kid
16 Disguises
17 Tattoo
18 Shakin' All Over (Live)
19 My Wife
20 Eminence Front

My intent was to not duplicate any tracks, although if I were to compile what I consider a true Who Best Of, it would contain songs from both lists. Cheers.
