sadly the only songs of his i've heard in full are Hurt, and the song that was in dawn of the dead, so i haven't really heard much. if possible, i'd prefer a 1 disc set with about 20 songs, and not a huge box set.

It looks like this might be your best bet, if you only want one disc:

If you're looking for more stuff like "Hurt" you can't go wrong with any of his four American Recordings CDs:
American Recordings
Unchained
Solitary Man
When the Man Comes Around
These were his last four albums and they're all amazing. Seriously, pick one of the above and enjoy. Then later, if you want, get another one.
But, if you're interesting in hearing a sampling of classic Cash songs, I'd recommend At San Quentin (The Complete Concert) over any of the greatest hits that are currently out. An excelent live CD with some of his classic songs- plus you absolutely must hear the inmates as they react to the song he wrote just for that concert called (what else) 'San Quentin'.
And if you decide to go the boxset route after all, Love, God & Murder is a 3 disc set with each disc devoted to one of the three topics in the set's title- this set includes the classics with some of his newer stuff.

There's also Columbia Records' "Essential Johnny Cash" which includes tracks spanning his entire career -- including doing a lead vocal turn for U2 in 1993. It doesn't include anything from his last album, though, since this was released a year or so earlier.

Since you said you're low on cash, I recommend The Essential Johnny Cash as a one-stop shopping place, although it doesn't include any of his American Recordings albums. If you just want a sample of those, I'd say #2 - "Unchained" - might be your best bet IMHO.

so it seems like, get "essential", one of the prision albums, and one of the "american recordings" right.
