Frank Sinatra suggestions please!
I've always listened more to Tony Bennett or Dean Martin (my mom used to listen to them when I was young).
Of course I know a couple of Sinatra songs (Fly me to the moon, Witchcraft and You make me feel so young for example). I would appreciate your advice on some Sinatra classics; ballads or slow songs are ok but I especially enjoy those "ring-a-ding-ding" "cukoo" uptempo songs where the brass section goes nuts! Thanks in advance! Now I'm gonna get a martini and go flirt with some dames ;) |
The Best Is Yet to Come
It Was a Very Good Year |
For some "fun" Sinatra, pick up any of his live albums.
Live at the Sands The Summit For more ballads, 'In the Wee Small Hours' is always a good pick for an album. |
If you want to get started with single disc releases, my recommendation is always <b>Classic Sinatra: His Great Performances 1953-1960</b> and <b>Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years</b>. The first gives you a badass collection from the Capitol years, with the fantastic Nelson Riddle arrangements. The latter is a more subdued collection from the Reprise years. Between the two, you'll get a wide array of performances showcasing why Sinatra was the man. It's almost criminal to try and compress his career into these "Best of" collections, but if you're looking for a starting point, I cannot recommend these two albums enough. If you want something live, <b>Sinatra at the Sands</b> is damn good.
As for kickin' singles (particularly the Nelson Riddle arrangements): I've Got the World on a String, I Get a Kick Out of You, I've Got You Under My Skin, Come Dance with Me, Come Fly with Me, <s>Come Watch Television With Me</s>, The Lady is a Tramp, Night and Day, It Happened in Monterey, Oh Look at Me Now, Luck be a Lady, My Kind of Town, Chicago, New York New York ... all pretty upbeat ring-a-dingin' tunes. das |
One of my favorite uptempo songs by Sinatra is "The Coffee Song." It's just so darn corny, it's great.
There's some funny stuff by him (and Dean and Sammy) on the Rat Pack's Live at the Sands. |
I've always loved "Me and My Shadow" with Frank and Sammy.

"Luck Be A Lady" and "That's Life"

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I downloaded a couple of them but I'll pick up Sinatra at the Sands for sure.

Unless you're a fan of cheese, go with the Capitol albums first. Songs For Swingin' Lovers and In the Wee Small Hours are generally considered his best, and I don't disagree. The former is more uptempo, and the latter has more ballads and a more somber mood. Also look for other classics like Songs For Young Lovers/Swing Easy, Come Dance With Me, and Come Fly With Me. I own all of the above and many more.

my favorite song by him:
The Summer Wind (also the theme to The Pope of Greenwich Village) |
If you like Frank Sinatra, then you'll love Cake's "Fashion Nugget"! ;)
