AoTD: I'm probably going to put on Getz/Gilberto or Cocteau Twins. Maybe some Serge if I'm feeling diRRty, or Billie Holiday if I'm feeling lubby-dubby. Or lovey-dovey (?), hell I never knew the difference. |

But if that wasn't going on, I'd be at home, hitting the bottle and wallowing to some George Jones, Gerald Collier, or Johnny Cash. |

Have always thought Neil Young's Harvest Moon was great. Other random question: I was reading a recent New York Times Sundar edition, and in their "Spins" section one of their columnists (Neil Straus?) recommended the latest albums from the Long Winters and Okkervil River. I've seen OR mentioned a few times in here; don't recall LW coming up. I don't have a great sense of the type of music they play -- is it pop like a) the Shins, or b) the New Pornographers, or c) the Old 97s, or d) what else? Just trying to get a sense of whether or not I'd like them... (I think I probably would...) |

Centro-matic - Redo the Stacks Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain [Remastered] Lambchop - Thriller Mice Parade - Obrigado Saudade The Mountain Goats - Bitter Melon Farm Snow Patrol - Final Straw AOTD - The lady and I don't celebrate Valentine's Day...however, we will be watching a friend's band play in Hoboken, so we shall be listening to music--but mood setting, it shall be not. SAShepherd: The Long Winters are a pretty cool band--their last album ("When I Pretend to Fall") is fantastic. The guy behind the band has a very Michael Stipe-ish quality to his voice, with strange and ambiguous lyricism to match. The music is very much what you would expect from a power-pop band that has people from the R.E.M./Minus 5/Posies/etc circle involved...very rich production and well-crafted instrumentation. In fact, the reason I bought the album was because I saw the all-star cast that was involved...so if you're a fan of those guys, then go for it! fallow: Is that new Destroyer album any good. I've been curious to hear it. |
That's a pretty good cover. I heard some guy do the most uncompelling cover EVER of "I'll Be in the Air." The only thing it lacked was Phil Elvrum's voice.
The Destroyer album is really quite good. This is what I posted in a different forum: ...The disc, on the other hand, is very good -- up there in my notebook list-'o'-notable-releases (which says a lot). I'm a newcomer to Destroyer so I can't really tell you how it measures up to the rest of his work, but if Hunky Dory, like I've heard, was a sort of base for his previous albums, then this one is his anomaly. He uses some big, reverbed out orchestral instruments but it's so subtle it doesn't come off as corny and/or dramatic. It just sounds really good. The first thing I noted is some flighty keys that reminded me of Air's Virgin Suicides soundtrack without the dour sheen. Bright and lovely. Keep in mind that since I'm just making my rounds on Destroyer my opinion may not be shared by the hardcore followers. http://www.catbirdseat.org/catbirdseat/ |
