Favorite 2+ Decade Spanning Artist
List off yr favorite musicians that have been in the game for 2 decades or more, any decades. My standard, suburban, college student list, in rough order, looks like:
Paul Westerberg Sonic Youth Wire Tom Waits Mission of Burma Pere Ubu The Cure* Nick Cave* Steve Albini Lou Reed* *though ___ hasn't had a really great album in a decade or so. Predictions: David Bowie, Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Lou Reed will *probably* own this thread. |
Iron Maiden
Slayer Jean Luc Ponty Dave Brubeck Dolly Parton |
Depeche Mode
Tori Amos The Cure |

My criterion for "in the game" is having put out at least two good albums, 20 years apart. And if I'm only counting pop artists, the only ones that even come close are Bob Dylan, Richard Thompson, Tom Petty, and Elvis Costello. I don't think the Stones have released anything listenable since Tattoo You and that was in '81. The Who fare even worse, as do the Kinks. As far as younger artists, they all either split up (The Clash, The Jam) or began to suck after a few years (REM, U2). Now, if you count The Jam and Paul Weller as the same artist, then I'll add him to the list.

Talking Heads = 1977-1988 < two decades. David Byrne, on the other hand, would be another pick that I forgot. And I included Paul Westerberg with his Replacements work in mind, so Paul Weller for The Jam would be legit.

David Bowie
Jethro Tull Iron Maiden Pink Floyd/Roger Waters |
Metallica
Pink Floyd Fleetwood Mac Rush U2 Depeche Mode |

Pursuant to the qualification discussion, I'm willing to have the time period between first and last album be a little less than 20 years, if only because artists are playing music before their first album and after their last album.
Or maybe this is just tweaking the "rules" so that I can include TMBG on my list. ;) Anyway, here's my list of favorite artists that have 2+ decades under their belt... They Might Be Giants U2 R.E.M. Miles Davis And, pushing the timeline... Lyle Lovett The Jayhawks |
Bowie, again.
Ozzy Osbourne Alice Cooper..I didn't like Trash very much, but he picked up speed again with Brutal Planet. AC/DC Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music Since you say musicians I like, and don't specify that they have to be popular, Christian Death [in various incarnations]. Although I thought that Born-Again Anti-Christian was something of a disappointment; it wasn't bad in and of itself, but it sort of had a different focus from the last couple albums. Hmm, |
If by two decades, we just mean spanning two decades rather than 20 years: Pearl Jam
If 20 years, then: U2 |

Another vote for They Might Be Giants, and a first for XTC.

Phish
David Byrne/Talking Heads R.E.M. Bob Dylan Lou Reed/Velvet Underground* Rolling Stones** David Lowery/Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker*** *Though his recent work has been spotty and the Raven stunk. **Though just about all their new music for the past 20 years has stunk. ***It's only been 19 years since Telephone Free Landslide Victory, but I'll assume CVB formed in at least 1984. |
Primus
U2 R.E.M. Peter Gabriel |
neil young (over 30 years apart, "everybody knows this is nowhere, and "greendale." both albums are AMAZING!
