I couldn't stand the song then, I can't stand it now. There's already enough awful NEW music out there to choose from, so it doesn't make sense to me that stations have to still play it. It's like EMF owns the DJ's souls!!!

Groucho 01-26-04 08:49 AM

OH!

Actually, I liked it then and I like it now. Must not listen to enough radio to get tired of it...

I'm in the same boat. I bought the CD single when it was released. There's some decent remixes on it.

I see it as rather subversive. :) One of the vocal samples in the song says "what the f**k" (repeated throughout the song). Although it doesn't really sound like it much, that's what's said if you read the lyrics from the CD. And the song's played endlessly on the radio and at sporting events.

Points off for using that hack Andrew "Dice" Clay, though ("OH!").

Andalusia 01-26-04 11:34 AM

I was thinking the same thing recently. I also hear the song "Right Here Right Now" more times than necessary. What's it been, 14 years?

Well, you do know what 'EMF' stands for, right? :)

Kal-El 01-26-04 11:58 AM

Sury, why not? I like the song. OH!

MJKTool 01-26-04 12:55 PM

People still listen to the radio? :hscratch:

That and the fact that K-mart uses it in all their commercials now.

DodgingCars 01-26-04 03:59 PM

We must ban all music that is over 5 years old!!!

j123vt_99 01-26-04 05:36 PM

How's about a "Schubert Dip" ?!?

Ergyu 01-26-04 05:58 PM

Never heard this song, or heard of this group, but this is what All Music had to say about their name:

All five members — vocalist James Atkin, guitarist Ian Dench, keyboardist Derry Brownson, bassist Zachary Foley, and drummer Mark Decloedt — were veterans of the local music scene before founding EMF, whose name supposedly stood for "Epsom Mad Funkers" (although it was widely speculated that the initials instead represented "Ecstasy Mind *****ers").

Well I think Epsom Mad Funkers was probably the initial meaning from what I can tell they always said different things. The song "EMF" has the chorus "E! Ecstacy/ M! Mother****** (x2)/F! From us to you" IIRC

Unbelievable and possibly their followup single Children are probably their worst songs (except for the majority of stuff found on the later album Cha Cha Cha). They were a great group though. The full length album Stigmata and The Unexplained E.P. are both amazing and should really be listened to. They dropped a lot of their cheesy dance sound and put out some really great songs. They get a bad rap because of Unbelievable IMO. I know a lot of people who just won't give them a chance because of that song.

IIRC one of them either killed themselves or is dead now from other circumstances.

How true. I'm one of those people ... in fact, i'm utterly surprised to hear that they supposedly have some good music .... guess i'll have to check them out and see for myself.

Actually by your thead title it is. Your complaining that stations play old songs instead of new (crap) songs.

Toad 01-28-04 07:47 AM

Thread is about EMF.

Bling bling.

Oh, now it's Smeg Off, so I'll add that too.

Actually, by his thread title, it never says anything about banning any song over 5 years old. The most it seems to imply is that the song is overplayed and has been for quite some time. They just need to play it less, not delete it completely.

Thanks - that's what I was trying to get at. I listen to mostly oldies, so in no way would I imply that sonds over 5 years old should be banned. Deriving that from my thread title about a band's overplayed song is illogical.

I bet the next sarcasm/argument is:
"All songs that are played too much should be banned!"

To pre-empt that: no, that's not what I'm saying either.

Call the station and bitch to them then. I listen to an 80's 90's station everyday and have maybe heard that song twice in the past year so I doubt it is as bad as you say. Or you could just turn the station over to something else. And no that wasn't a sarcastic comment/argument.

LivingINClip 01-28-04 10:39 AM

This thread..is..just..well..it's just unbelievable.

It's my right to post my bitches here, so I'll stick to that.

I rarely listen to the radio, and have heard the song twice in the last week on our "Best hits of the 80s, 90s and today!" radio station here (we have only one).

I'm not omniscient, so I have no idea what they play in every area obviously, but I find it odd if Tallahassee somehow has a bigger fan-base for EMF thus requiring their hit song to be played more frequently than wherever you live.

P.S. When that song comes on, not per your suggestion mind you, I happily and very expeditiously turn the radio station over to something else. In fact, I'll even take booty rap over it. Yes booty rap. And we all know how much booty rap sucks. However - if anyone here disagrees, you can feel free to move here because while we may have only one "Best hits of the 80s, 90s and today!" station here, we have about 9-10 booty rap stations that you may listen to.
