Good Riddance - Green Day

and probably the most popular break up song of all time would be 'End of the Road' by Boys II Men. 13 weeks at No. 1. One song to rule them all. ;

Pearl Jam- Black. Hand's down, my favorite song ever.

Pearl Jam- Porch. Seems almost like the sequel to black, at the bitter stage following the depressed stage.

Coldplay- The scientist.

The whole Beck-Sea Change album. He wrote it after breaking off an 8 year relationship, it came out right when I broke off an 8 year relationship. It was very theraputic.

**** And Run Liz Phair

I woke up alarmed
I didn't know where I was at first
Just that I woke up in your arms
And almost immediately I felt sorry
Cause I didn't think this would happen again
No matter what I could do or say
Just that I didn't think this would happen again
With or without my best intentions
And whatever happened to a boyfriend
The kind of guy that tries to win you over?
And whatever happened to a boyfriend
The kind of guy who makes love cause he's in it?

And I want a boyfriend
I want a boyfriend
I want all that stupid old shit like letters and sodas
Letters and sodas

You got up out of bed
You said you had a lot of work to do
But I heard the rest in my head
And almost immediately I felt sorry
Cause I didn't think this would happen again
No matter what I could do or say
Just that I didn't think this would happen again
With or without my best intentions

And I want a boyfriend
I want a boyfriend
I want all that stupid old shit like letters and sodas
Letters and sodas

And I can feel it in my bones
I'm gonna spend another year alone
It's **** and run, **** and run
Even when I was seventeen
**** and run, **** and run
Even when I was twelve

You almost felt bad
You said that I should call you up
But I knew much better than that
And almost immediately I felt sorry
Cause I didn't think this would happen again
No matter what I could do or say
Just that I didn't think this would happen again
With or without my best intentions

And I can feel it in my bones
I'm gonna spend my whole life alone
It's **** and run, **** and run
Even when I was seventeen
**** and run, **** and run
Even when I was twelve

Basically the entire Matchbook Romance album "Stories and Alibis" (esp. "Playing For Keeps", "Promise", "My Eyes Burn", "She'll Never Understand").

The "Heartbreaker" album by Ryan Adams

and, um, half of the "Affirmation" album by Savage Garden, especially "I Don't Know You Anymore"

The Flaming Lips - Fight Test

okay, it might not explicitly be about breaking up, but there certainly is an underlying theme of how the protagonist lost his love to another guy...

The best breakup song of all-time is "Say Hello Wave Goodbye" by David Gray. It's about 8 minutes long, and as stripped down as acoustic sound can be. It's a beautiful and tear-jerking song. Wodnerful stuff.

A close second is "Halloween" by Dave Matthews Band. It's a big "f u" song that Dave wrote after a girl had turned down his marriage proposal for a second time. For more light DMB breakup songs, "#41" and "Pay For What You Get" are priceless.

A small band called Abandoned Pools put out a great song called "Nothing". Check it out sometime.

That is a great song. Especially the version on the Recently EP. I'm not as fond of the version on Before These Crowded Streets.

the "Are you satisfied with f**king" line is priceless.
