Suggestions on Gread DVD Audio Discs
 

I searched for a similar thread but couldn't find one. So I would like to pose a question:

I just got Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles... in DVD Audio. Even with the screw up at the end, I was absolutely blown away. I put my easy chair in the center of the living room and the sounds just filled the room. Absolutely amazing. I've been avoiding DVDA because I didn't think it would be all that. Turns out I'm wrong.

I'd like to ask those of you with experience with these discs if there are any other DVD Audio discs out there that are as surreal and fun as the Flaming Lips one.

I have a tremendously broad taste in music, so all suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!

I'd like to second this request, and also would like to know some stellar SACD releases, as well.

In my extended family's Christmas drawing, I have my cousin's name. He's been through a couple of record engineering programs and is now an intern at a studio in Nashvegas. Anyway, he's developed quite an ear for music and how it is recorded. I'm planning on getting him a few essential DVD-As and SACDs, since he just got a player. What would be essential albums to have, from a recording/production standpoint?

Tipper: Surrounded

This DVD-A was MADE for a 5.1 environment, and after listening to it you will agree-you actually feel surrounded by the music. Kind of a electronic-techno-chill out type vibe, but very enjoyable whatever your musical style. There are accompanying videos for several of the songs, but I found them distracting and love to just sit and experience the songs by themselves. It is quite an amazing sonic experience. Highly recommended.

I have a few DVD-A's and tell you what I think:

Neil Young-Harvest: A great DVD-A. The packaging is awesome and the mixes are song specific. Some are studio, so the surround is toned down, and some are live so there is more surrond.

R.E.M.-Automatic For the People: Awesome. Great. A must buy.

R.E.M.-Reveal:Pretty good, the songs aren't surround material, but it is good.

Joey Ramone-Don't Worry About Me: Sucks. Not much surround.

for DVD-A
Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly" sounds amazing and is a fantastic album to boot.
For SACD, the obvious choice is DSOTM, but Steely Dan's Gaucho is fantastic as well.

I don't have it but I know the music on the standard cd sonically sounds good so the dvd audio version must sound awesome.

Metallica - The Black Album (DVD-A)

I'll agree with all those choices above and add:

Steely Dan - Everything Must Go
Pink Floyd - Dark Side

but my two favorites are

Beck Sea Change SACD
Flaming Lips Yoshimi DVD-A

Both amazing

Question: now that multi channel sound is more easily possible, will the Flaming Lips reissue Zaireeka in DVD-A form?

There is a poll on their site to see which one of their WB albums gets the DVD-A treatment next.

I am personally against a surrond version of Zaireeka until the technology to facilitate 8.1 sound is available.

Flaming Lips Yoshimi DVD-A Question

Sorry to go off topic but....

Is there a way to save the b-sides from the dvd to a computer in an audio format and then burn them to disc. I want to make up a cd that includes all the tracks from Yoshimi plus all the b-sides from the cd/dvd and eps.

BTW, this would be for my own personal use only. Shouldn't be a problem since I bought Yoshimi, Yoshimi CD/DVD, Fight Test EP and Ego EP. This is turning into an expensive album.

So I ended up getting Buena Vista Social Club (DVD-A) and Dave Brubeck's Time Out (SACD) for my cousin, as both are favorites of mine that I think that he may enjoy. Has anyone heard either of these in the new formats?

I also agree that R.E.M. : Automatic for the People is an essential DVD-A disc. I also really enjoyed The Doors : LA Woman.

Question: Is Beck : Sea Change in DVD-A as well as SACD?

It just came out Tuesday in DVD-A. I may have to buy it even though I already have the SACD because of the videos and the photo gallery. Plus the change in the cover art is too cool:
