Mix CDs
Anyone else really like making mix CDs, either for personal use or for friends? A lot of the people I know stick pretty close to the music they're used to, so it's nice to help introduce new stuff once in a while with some mixes. This is a nice time of year, too, since they work well as inexpensive gifts for co-workers and acquaintances. :)
Working on good cover artwork is also something I've come to appreciate over the years, graduating from basic handwritten track listings to full-blown fancypants Photoshop jobs. :p Here's the latest pair I've made: disc one and disc two; and here are some other recent ones: 01, 02, 03, and 04. You guys have any particular mixes you're proud of or want to share? |
I love making mixtapes, but some of our requests get challenging. Some of them are pretty hilarious, too. Here's one I made a month or two ago.
Mix tape of "mourning" music? Too much of a downer? Not all of us are "shiny, happy people." I very much enjoy making mixes. However, the process is not nearly as much fun with CD burning as it was with tapes. In the early 90s/late 80s I'd sit down with a beer and actually get to listen to the songs I was recording to tape and enjoy the whole experience in one big go. Now, I gotta put each disc in the cd burner twice and can't listen while it records. The end product might be more desirable, but it's not as much fun.
Anyway, it's cool to be able to make CD mixes. No doubt. |

The Flamin' Groovies -- "Babes in the Sky" 6. Sleater-Kinney -- "Funeral Song" 7. The Magnetic Fields -- "All My Little Words" 8. Damien Jurado/Rosie Thomas -- "Parking Lot" 9. De La Soul/Teenage Fanclub -- "Fallin'" 10. Slick Rick/OutKast -- "Street Talkin'" 11. The Delgados -- "Pull the Wires from the Wall" 12. Belle & Sebastian -- "A Summer Wasting" 13. David Bowie -- "What in the World" 14. The Jam -- "Absolute Beginners" 15. Pavement -- "And Carrot Rope" |
Here's one I made for my friend Eliza. I guess it's kinda weird/goofy, but I made it to be dreamlike--first couple of tracks are actually fading into sleep, and then the dreams are celestial and, well, dreamy. Then with Morrissey it takes a disturbing turn into the land of nightmares. That part ends with the Jayhawks on a hopeful note. Then, waking up and realizing, as the quotes from Shakespeare cap off, dreams don't really matter because they're just that, good and bad. I got the clips at the end from Baz Luhrmann's movie.
I know it's stupid, but I thought it was really cool when I made it. :) Sleeper’s journey through dreams mix (with a nihilistic twist): Barenaked Ladies – “When you Dream” Glenn Kotche – “Mask” Spiritualized – “Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space” Hem – “Sailor” Sigur Ros – “Njosnavelin” Rachel Loshak – “Rain” Minus 5 – “Days of Wine and Booze” Iron and Wine – “Southern Anthem” Air – “Highschool Lover” Ed Harcourt – “Beneath the Heart of Darkness” Morrissey – “Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning” Low – “Little Argument with Myself” Radiohead – “Exit Music (For a Film)” Wilco – “Via Chicago” Jayhawks – “Will I See you in Heaven?” Mogwai – “Radar Maker” Handsome Family – “Drunk by Noon” Romeo and Juliet – I.iv: 51-54, 96-100 |
I usually make party/dance mixes -more so last year than this one- but occasionally make tapes for friends when the mood hits me. My friend, Marie, is usually on the receiving end.
I have three on Art of the Mix: one for the above friend, a second for my art history professor, and another for the last party I went to. I haven't really tried pushing my ideas too far; generally, I just shoot for flow. I'm working one out for my girlfriend that I want to be, naturally, very special and I'm also considering a 2k3 mix of my favorite singles and songs (which might span several tapes). |
This is a little off topic, but...
fallow, what did you think of Jim O'Rourke's score on Love Liza? |
Haven't heard it, I'm afraid. Does it get yr nod?
|
I'm not fallow, but O'Rourke's work on Love Liza was good enough to get me interested in his music. :)

Originally posted by Cosmic Bus I'm not fallow, but O'Rourke's work on Love Liza was good enough to get me interested in his music. :) I'm not sure it could've been better suited to the movie--it is gentle and unobtrusive, really nice. I was skeptical about it at first because Jim O'Rourke is generally hit or miss (with me). |
Well I love love love love love love love Jim O'Rourke, so I'll definitely go looking for it (once I get some damn money, that is [re: after Christmas {re: never}]).
