Today's CDs (12/1-12/5)

The Soundtrack of Our Lives - Behind the Music (picked up from library -- not bad; reminded me of both the Beatles and Pink Floyd)
V/A - Hawaiian Slack Key Christmas
Whiskeytown - Faithless Street
Kelly Willis - Easy
V/A - Jazz For When You're Alone

QOTD: When is the earliest (if at all) you'll willingly listen to Christmas or other winter-holiday-themed music? I've got about a half-dozen Christmas CDs I really like, but with the exception of George Winston's "December" (only partially Christmas-related), I refuse to listen to them except between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

Zakk Wylde - Book of Shadows
Pride & Glory
Poison - Best of Ballads and Blues
Mötley Crüe - Decade of Decadence

Gerald Collier - Breakin' Down
Gerald Collier - Low Tar Taste
Blink 182 - s/t
L.A. Symphony - The End Is Now
v/a - Christmas: Remixed
Brian Setzer Orchestra - Boogie Woogie Christmas
Harry Connick, Jr. - Harry for the Holidays
George Winston - December

QotD: I'm one that really loves Christmas music and have a metric ton of holiday CDs. Ideally, I listen from Thanksgiving and beyond so I don't get too burned out. But each year for the past 5 years I've compiled a Christmas CD for friends and family to go out with their cards. I like to get those made up and copied during the first week of December, so I listen and compile starting around the week or two before Thanksgiving. This year's disc:

1. "Christmas Island" - Jimmy Buffett
2. "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" - Jack Johnson
3. "Mistletoe and Holly" - Frank Sinatra
4. "A Marshmallow World" - Dean Martin
5. "The Christmas Song" - Sammy Davis, Jr.
6. "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" - Johnny Cash
7. "Christmas Time" - Bill Cosby
8. "Donde Esta Santa Claus" - Augie Rios
9. "Frosty the Snowman" - Harry Connick, Jr.
10. "Jingle Bells" - Brian Setzer Orchestra
11. "What Child Is This?" - Vince Guaraldi Trio
12. "Silent Night" - Stanley Jordan
13. "Chipmunk Christmas" - John Scofield
14. "Sugar Rum Cherry" - Duke Ellington
15. "Winter Wonderland" - Harry Connick, Jr.
16. "Swiss Colony Beef Log" - Eric Cartman
17. "Sleigh Ride" - The 3 Tenors
18. "The Chanukah Song (Part 2)" - Adam Sandler
19. "Christmas Day" - Dido
20. "Baby, It's Cold Outside (Mulato Beat Remix)" - Louis Armstrong & Velma Middleton
21. "Six to Eight Black Men" - written and read by David Sedaris
22. (hidden) barking dogs doing "Jingle Bells"

Holopaw - ST
Belle & Sebastian - Step Into My Office, Baby
Minders - The Future is Always Perfect
Benjamin Gibbard and Andrew Kenny - Split
DJ Shadow - The Private Press
Low - Christmas
Tuscadero - The Pink Album
Extra Glenns - Martial Arts Weekend
All Girl Summer Fun Band - 2
Mates of State - Team Boo
Guided by Voices - Human Amusements... (Greatest Hits)

Never too early for the Christmas music. I listen to it as often at this time of the year (or later, of course) as I do just about any other time, although I really don't listen to too much of it.

I do make special note to bring my own music when I'd otherwise be forced to listen to somebody else's idea of a Rockin'/Swingin'/New Agin' Good Christmas Time (e.g., giving blood).

Prince, Sign 'O' the Times
Sufjan Stevens, Michigan
The Unicorns, Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?
Menomena, I Am the Fun Blame Monster
Marvin Gaye, Best of
Metric, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now
Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn & Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Songs from the Black Mtn. Project
Young People, War Prayers
The Star Spangles, Bazooka!!!
I Am Kloot, I Am Kloot
Animal Collective, Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished/Danse Manatee re-issue 2xCD. This is one of those sets I feel like anyone w/ a passing interest in said band should own. Two OOP (as far as I know?) albums for $16? No way could you pass this up, and Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished blows everything they've done clear out of the water, IMHO.

QoTD: Generally, Christmas music really gets on my nerves. I do have a soft spot in my heart for some of the songs that DJLinus mentioned -Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, etc- for some weird reason or another. I could also listen to Tom Waits belt out "Christmas Card from a Hooker in a Minneapolis" any time.

I really like this I Am Kloot disc. Seems to pull from lesser-exhausted influences like The La's and Robyn Hitchcock. Very lush and gorgeous; it'll probably make my top 20, maybe top 10, for the year.

I talked about the Unicorns disc in last week's CDs thread. Here is what I said:

I'm really loving this Unicorns album...it dives into the direction that I thought Menomena would go: attention-deficient pop that doesn't lose its fun edge while launching into a place you never expected them to go. Probably the closest references I can make would be moments of early Spoon guitartistry (esp. on "The Clap" which sounds like the freaky-cousin-in-the-closet of A Series of Sneaks) + an elastic Moog and a singer that is stuck between the sighs of Bill Doss (Olivia Tremor Control) and Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene).
What do you find so dull about The Unicorns disc, Yancey?

I listened to it twice. Just nothing about it grabbed me. I don't even remember what it sounds like.

I wasn't too impressed with that Unicorns album, either.
