I have exactly 75 of these.

BTW, why the hell would you put a greatest hits or anthology on a top 500 albums list. That is just freaking stupid.

Not only does Van Halen only have 1 album on this list compared to No Doubt's 2, but one of the No Doubt albums is listed 100 places higher than the only Van Halen entry.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Need any more proof that this list is compiled by morons.

because some of those do a better job at giving a clear overview of a band/artist than any one of their albums did.

I feel your pain. Achtung Baby is their best, IMO.

I also think In Utero is better than Nevermind.

Yeah, that IS really ****ing stupid. Doesn't make any sense...

Perhaps they're working on a top 500 GH/anthology album list and will put regular albums on it..

Speaking specifically about the hip hop albums on the chart:

Eminem has all three of his albums on the chart....huh? He is talented as an emcee but not that good and certainly not deserving of three spots on the chart, especially all three ahead of Nas's Illmatic at 400. In my opinion none of his albums have really been all that solid or deserving to be on the list but I can see including one for his sheer potential, probably his second album. Also JayZ's Blueprint shouldn't have made it instead of some other hip hop greats.

But seriously there are some obvious absences if Eminem is going to get three spots (I am sure I will miss quite a few but off the top of my head, and didn't see these guys in a quick search):

The Roots - Things Fall Apart..maybe an earlier album
Blackstar
Common
KRS-One

And two I will add (though I wouldn't expect them on there) cause they are my favorite emcees:

J-Live - All of the Above
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides

I just love how bent out of shape people always get out of these kinds of lists. It's just one magazine's (or group of people's) opinion, folks. Personally I love these kind of things even if I don't always agree with them, and a list as huge and varied as this offers me at least lots of chances to learn about classic albums I may not have or even know about. I recall a similar list RS did in '89 or so that managed to introduce me to folks like Richard Thompson and Husker Du.

As for this list, it's probably the first issue of RS I've bought in ten years actually worth holding on to. Interesting stuff, and a lot of great picks IMHO.

Same list, Christmas filler.

The editors of RS simply wanted a week off.

My question is: how many times can they run the same damned blurbs for the same damned albums?

Essentially, this list is the equivalent of summer reruns.

No need for a new thread, but Apple Music just released their selections for the 100 Best Albums of All-Time.

I am wondering what went into choosing a Lauryn Hill album that I haven't heard a song off of in like 25 years over three albums that I seem to be unable to avoid hear something off of constantly.

I really do love that album. The rare one that I bought the day it came out -- the hype was SO strong (Cover of Time Magazine and everything). Never disappointed.

Frank Ocean at 5 seems WAY too high though.

Siouxie & The Banshee - Juju should have been in 500 best albums, I loved that album.

I am not questioning it being on the list, just its placement. The thing I keep seeing about that album is that it inspired every hip hop artist since it came out. If that is the criteria that got it to #1, then why is the first Ramones album not on the list, since every punk rock band was inspired by it?

Good question. I know it and at least one of their other first four records would be in my top 100 personally. Though I have huge gaps in musical knowledge. I couldn’t name a Frank Ocean song and my opinion on Taylor Swift is limited to thinking the idea of secret songs on tour is really cool.

re: Top Albums of All Time lists - Discussion

I never got all of the hype and fawning over "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."

I remember when it came out in the late 1990s, and there was a ton of hype over it before it was even released. It was years before I heard anything off of it, and I couldn't understand the absolute obsession over the album. I mean, it's not my thing at all, and I guess it was probably good for what it was, but it seemed like a pretty standard pop/r&b album.

I guess that, back in 1998, it might have been leagues above what had been produced in the hip-hop/r&b genre for the previous decade, but I don't think it was anywhere near as brilliant as something like "Abbey Road" or "Sgt. Pepper."

Now, I found Beyonce's "Lemonade," (also on the list) to be unlistenable. Tons of hype and praise for what seemed like a bunch of blather over a cacophony of samples.

re: Top Albums of All Time lists - Discussion

A lot of these list are just box checking at this point. For the last 40 year the Rolling Stone list always had Pet Sounds or Sgt Pepper at the top spot but now it is Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. Not that WGO isn't a great album but what made it jump up all of a sudden? I could see if an album that came out post 1990's leaped up. Same with the best songs. Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone" or the Stone's Satisfaction always topped the list but now it is Aretha Franklen's RESPECT.

I can sort of see all of the praise "Sgt Pepper" gets.

Now, "Pet Sounds," on the other hand, no... it's still just a Beach Boys album. They're a novelty act, barely a step above the Monkees.
