Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, and U2, and The Who

and might I add, Jethro Tull, King Crimson

are not in the top 20

And Sinatra, and Fitzgerald, and Vaughn, and Eckstine

All of those artists make the top 500, however. (I think there are three Floyd records, three Who records and EVERY Zeppelin record. The wrong Tull record(s) (don't remember how many) made it -- ie no Still Was or Stand Up).

Looks like they're trying to regain their credibility from last year when Nirvana was somewhere around #3 in the "top albums of all time" list. There was such a huge shit-storm when they did that issue.

Funny how something so irrelevant can create "a huge shit-storm."

BTW, where's Pearl Jam in all this? Oh wait, Nevermind.

And MJKTool, you may not like the Beatles, but it is utterly indisputable that they have had a greater influence on popular music than any band ever. Like them or not, get used to it. It isn't ass-kissing, it's reality.

I always can't understand those that can't listen to the Beatles. Some fools my age say it's too old. Hello!? I have more of their songs on my mp3 list -- lol --- than any other band, and that's saying something! And, in terms of influence - ahhhhhhhhhhhh............... ah.

I highly doubt all zep records are gonna be on there. I bet up to houses of the holy, and maybe the live cd that was released this year.

dude, i've seen the list. no, not literally every record, but roughly 7 or 8 zep albums. (which is just ridiculous -- the live album from this year's the best thing they've ever released)

I think some of you want a top 20 that includes like 50 albums.

Just looked over the list. My thoughts:

#1 The Beatles deservedly take the top spot, even though it should've been Revolver

#2 A Velvet Underground in the Top 20?

#3 Nirvana deserves all the accolades they receive so all you hatas can shove it. Nevermind WILL stand the test of time, as will In Utero which I think is an even better album.

#4 No Doors? To quote Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Almost Famous: "Jim Morrison was a drunken buffoon posing as a poet".

Im out

Another threadcrap - how original.

Back on topic, I call shenanigans on any poll that doesn't place Dark Side of the Moon squarely in the #1 spot. And where's OK Computer?
Over on another music discussion forum (no, not that one) someone raised the point that because Pepper ends off with A Day In The Life, listening to the album front to back gives the listener the feeling of having experienced something deeper than they really had. I definitely would have preferred to see Abbey Road or Revolver rank higher, or even the White Album, warts and all.

I'm amazed at the plethora of Rolling Stone lists..

Perhaps that says something about the state of music today that almost every other issue has this "Top xXx" filler..

Or perhaps it's the editors of this magazine..

Lists get attention -- that's what it amounts to.

Otherwise, it's Yancey's fault.

It's come to be more than expected though... I made my own top five though:

1) Pearl Jam: No Code
2) Bruce Springsteen: Born to Run
3) Bob Dylan: Blood on the Tracks
4) Pearl Jam: Yield
5) Rage Against the Machine: RATM

At least 2 of those were on their top 20... overall it looks like a very good list, and I've got no problems with The Beatles up there. I love so much of their work, but I've never really listened to it by album so I don't know which to pick.

i think that Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" and Zeppelin 4 should have been ahead of nevermind.

#62.
Achtung Baby
U2

#62? #62!?

Also, this list was probably made BEFORE Triumph the Insult Comic Dog's album came out...can't wait to see next year's list. If that CD doesn't crack the top 500, something will burn, WILL BURN I SAY!

Absolutely. The VU may not have sold many records, and they may not have been very good (from a raw talent/ability standpoint) -- but it's cool to think of it as "Everyone who bought a VU album listened to it, said 'I can do that,' went out and started a band."

And THAT is influence. The same sort of influence Nirvana brought with Nevermind. I know I thought, "I can do that," and bought a guitar.

I've got to say it's the same sort of influence the White Stripes are going to have on the current generation that is coming-to-age musically. They'll say "I can do that," and then they'll go out and do it.
Funny thing is, I remember my brother & me hearing the McCoys singing "Hang On Sloopy" & thinking, "We can do that." And so we did (form a garage band). However, I shudder to think of calling the McCoys a great artistic influence. Then again...our band wasn't very good.

Whitney Houston is on the list and Iron Maiden, Rush, and Ozzy aren't?

If anyone thinks "Whitney Houston" is better than "Number of the Beast," "2112," or "Blizzard of Ozz," then they're doing more crack than her and Bobbie Brown combined.

****'em.

Yes, these lists always suck, but this list sucks especially bad. A few bands/artists that were inexcusably excluded (IMO of course)...

Phish (They list live albums. Where the hell is A Live One?)
Camper Van Beethoven (Telephone Free Landslide Victory is one of the greatest indie albums of the 80s)
The Flaming Lips (Soft Bulletin? Where are you? You too, Yoshimi. Come to think of it...I'll include Zaireeka and Clouds Taste Metallic as well.)
Wilco (Both Summerteeth and YHF belong here. Particularly Summerteeth)
Uncle Tupelo (No No Depression? No Anodyne?)
Grandaddy (The Sophtware Slump is better than at least one of the Eminem albums. It has to be.)
Elliott Smith (Especially surprising considering he just left us)
Sebadoh (I like Pavement better, but c'mon. These guys are one of the greatest indie bands of all time...)
Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams (I'd have put Faithless Street on here, but I would've expected at least Gold...)
DJ Shadow (Endtroducing's absence is an absolute shocker...)
The Chemical Brothers or Fatboy Slim (Surely one of the two huge Big Beat artists deserve a spot. No Long Way Baby? No Dig Your Own Hole?)
Dave Matthews Band (I'm not even a big fan, but not one album???)
The Shins (Maybe this is just personal opinion, but if you found room for the White Stripes...)
Yo La Tengo (Obviously, Rolling Stone and indie rock do not get along particularly well...)
Ween (Chocolate & Cheese? Anyone?)
Sublime (Either 40 oz. or Sublime belongs high on this list)
Tool (Again, not a huge fan, but where the hell is Aenema?)
Tricky (Where in the world is Maxinquaye?)
Violent Femmes (According to my unscientific research, 65% of all college freshman for the past 25 years have owned their debut album. Apparently, none of Rolling Stone's writers have ever been college freshmen.)
Ozzy Osbourne (Again, not a big fan, but Blizzard of Ozz kicks some ass.)
Motley Crue or Poison (Glam metal may be laughable now. But it used to be extremely influential. At the very least, Too Fast for Love, Theatre of Pain or Look What the Cat Dragged In should have some place in the top 500)
