Today's CDs (10/27/03) -- what are you listening to?

For the week...

Uncle Tupelo -- Anodyne
Cake -- Fashion Nugget
...Trail of Dead -- Source Tags & Codes
Broken Social Scene -- You Forgot It In People
Freedy Johnston -- This Perfect World
New Pornographers -- Electric Version
Wilco -- A.M.
Kelly Willis -- What I Deserve
Diana Krall -- Stepping Out
Pittsburgh Sympony Orchestra -- Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, American in Paris
Afro-Cuban All Stars -- A Toda Cuba le Gusta
R.E.M. -- Lifes Rich Pageant
Matthew Sweet -- Time Capsule (Best of...)
George Winston -- Autumn
The Rapture -- Echoes

QOTD: Inspired by the R.E.M. greatest hits album coming out tomorrow (on pre-order for me).... Do you prefer your Greatest Hits albums organized chronologically or in some other manner? (Or do you have general distate for GH albums?) I prefer the chronological option -- must be my overly analytical mind... but am not a huge fan of GH albums in general.

The Jesus and Mary Chain- 21 Singles
The Rapture- Echoes
Joe Strummer and the Mescelaroes- Streetcore
Animal Collective- Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished

AOTD- I guess chronologicaly. I generally aren't a fan of Greatest Hits albums, either. Mostly because not many bands I listen to have any hits to begin with. Or I'd rather just buy the albums if I like the band. I guess having a JAMC Singles Collection in my listing makes me a bit of a hypocrite though, no?

VA - Stop me if you think you've heard this one before... (Rough Trade 25th Anniversary Comp)
The Thermals - More Parts Per Million
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
Owls - ST
The Rapture - Echoes
Belle & Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress
The Polyphonic Spree - The Beginning Stages of...
Isobel Campbell - Amorino
Mojave 3 - Spoon and Rafter

AOTD
Pretty much what Poink and jarsim said. I don't give the order much thought, at any rate.

The Stills- Logic Will Break Your Heart
The Shins- Chutes Too Narrow
David Bowie- Hunky Dory
The Rapture- Echoes
Oasis- Be Here Now
Nick Cave- Let Love In

Sometimes greatest hits albums can be helpful, I like singles collections like "Singles Going Steady" by the Buzzcocks or "Gold" by Abba. Usually I listen to the albums more regularly.

Q of the D: chronological

The Shins - "Chutes Too Narrow"
The Rapture - "Echoes"
Yo La Tengo - "Today is the Day"
Scene Creamers - "I Suck On That Emotion"
Consonant - "Love and Distortion" (purchased for $.79 last weekend)

The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
Bubba Sparxxx - Deliverance (in spite of myself, I really like this disc)
Cafe Tacuba - Cuatros Caminos
Handsome Family - Singing Bones
De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead
Crooked Fingers - Bring on the Snakes

AOTD: I actually don't mind GH compilations in some respects. I certainly don't need more than that from the Jesus and Mary Chain or the Dead Milkmen. I like both bands, but if it weren't for GH collections, I wouldn't own anything by either of 'em. However, I would never buy a GH collection for a band that I had more than a remote interest in. Chronological is probably the best organization, but ultimately I don't care as long as the songs are there.

...and you will know us by the trail of dead - source tags
tegan and sara - the business of art
starflyer 59 - leave here a stranger
the thrills - so much for the city

AOTD - I guess that I prefer chronological if I wanted to get a GH album. I don't like GH though because it takes the songs out of their context.

The Doves album I found to be a tad underwhelmed. The mix CD is good, but the b-sides are mediocre at best.

Muse - even though criticized as being Radiohead-ish sounding this is superior to the Radiohead album IMO, the piano flourishes and dynamic surges in musical intensity are fantastic.

What's your take on Athlete, I have all the singles which I really like yet haven't bought the album, your thoughts?

Even though I have the singles from off the second Coral album I can't seem to say they are as good as the first album (IMO), are the other songs off of "Magic & Medicine" better or equal to the UK singles?

hey! a Kent fan, a trip to Scandanavia last year I bought Vapour, Hagnesta Hill and the double B-sides album, even though I was introduced to the band when Isola was released I have to say Vapour and Hagnesta are even better (and not sung in English).

I didn't pay much attention to the track listing before purchasing it or I would have realized a majority of the 'b-sides' were already bonus tracks on 'Lost Souls' and on the bonus CD for 'The Last Broadcast'. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with it.

Perhaps Muse's singer does sound a bit Yorke-ish and a few of the songs are a bit Radiohead-ish. I agree that 'Absolution' is a far superior album than 'Hail to the Thief'.

If you like the Athlete singles, by all means buy 'Vehicles & Animals' it's a pretty consistent record. One thing I can't get out of my head is that the singer sounds exactly like The Promise Ring's Von Bohlen without the lisp and sometimes even The Eels 'E' on occassion.

Definitely do not like 'Magic & Medicine' as much as their debut CD, although it might end up growing on me like the 1st one did which after the first few listens I hated.

Hagnesta Hill & Isola are both available in English. Their 1st 2 CD's (Self-Titled and Verkligen), B-Sidor, and their latest are only available in Swedish. Actually I believe Isola and Hagnesta Hill are also out in French believe it or not. Yes, I love the band too!

None of this week's new releases interested me, so I picked up MF Doom/Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain and found a used copy of the Dismemberment Plan's Ice of Boston EP.

Also spinning throughout the past week:

Dangermouse and Jemini - Ghetto Pop Life
Buddyhead presents: Gimme Skelter
Matthew Sweet - Kimi Ga Suri
The Books - The Lemon of Pink
Tujiko Noriko - From Tokyo to Naiagara
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow

That Tujiko Noriko album is great!

All I've listen to today is a mixed CD I made for my Art History professor. Tracklist goes a little somethin' like this:

1. The Books, "Enjoy Your Worries, You May Never Have Them Again"
2. Fennesz, "Caecilia"
3. Animal Collective, "Infant Dressing Table"
4. Tim Hecker, "The Work of Art in the Age of Cultural Overproduction"
5. Black Dice, "Things Will Never Be the Same"
6. Fennesz/O'Rourke/Rehberg, "A Viennese Tragedy"

We started talking about contemporary art the other day and I noted that I think many abstract artists could trace their influences back to people like Rothko, Kline and Pollack (a phenomenon that I think is a first). He was interested in hearing some of it, so I agreed to rip some albums onto my computer and burn him a CD. He's a pretty loopy guy - I can't wait to hear what he has to say about it.

I'm not much of one for Greatest Hits collections. I have to deal, though, considering it's hard to find Nina Simone's studio albums. I drop $14 for 2 or 3 songs every month or so.

I guess I prefer the chronological order so I can trace their progression (or digression, as it goes), but if I'm really that interested in how they've evolved over time, I probably own their albums anyway.

Gdrlv, what do you think of that Cafe Tacuba album? I reviewed it roughly a month ago, hated it, and was shocked that it got such rave reviews.

Clearlake - Cedars
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
Felt - Forever Breathes the Lonely Word
Josh Rouse - Dressed Up Like Nebraska
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
Elliott Smith - Elliott Smith
Songs: Ohia - Didn't It Rain
The Strokes - Room on Fire (a.k.a. "Experimentations with Palm-Muted Guitar Riffs")
Paul Westerberg - Come Feel Me Tremble

I'm generally not a GH fan; I guess I only find a GH/BO compilation to be of use when I don't really have interest in an artist's albums; they're also useful when the tracks on the comp are remastered, but the artist's catalogue has not been remastered (ie The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Beatles). But, when it comes to making such, I totally prefer a chronological order, only so it can give the listener a sense of how the artist may have changed throughout their career.

I see a lot of Shins on the lists...So, how is everyone enjoying the new Shins album? I came into it completely HATING the Shins (I had a horrible perception of the band from one of their live shows, before I had heard "Oh, Inverted World"). However, I must say that the new album ain't so bad...quite excellent, actually. I still cringe a bit when I hear James Mercer's voice, but it's still a great album overall.

jarsim & Giles: Kent is awesome. Saw them tour Isola...they're such an enegeritc live band! And you gotta have respect for people who record their albums in at least two languages! I hope they eventually do an English release for Vapour.

It's okay. Not bad but certainly not as great as the reviews that made me purchase it, particularly this one. I guess the ultimate judge will be whether I still have much desire to listen to it in a month or two, and I can already tell you that I won't.

Lamb - What Sound?
Pixies - Complete B-Sides
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Velour 100 - Of Colour Bright
Scud Mountain Boys - Massachusetts
Seely - Seconds
Alison Moorer - Miss Fortune
Throwing Muses - House Tornado
Juned - Every Night for You
Gemma Hayes - Night on My Side
Eisley - Laughing City
Elliott Smith - Either/Or (RIP Elliott!!)
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow

For artists I'm really into, I usually like the non-singles as much or more than the hits, so I usually only do a GH for those I have a passing interest in. But chronological is the way to do a GH IMO.
