Using any definition, Drive should have been on this disc. I'm someone who loves the old stuff like the guy who lists "Disturbance at the Heron House" and "Seven Chinese Brothers" as songs on his own mixes.

But I understand that's from another label and that they were doing a "hits" package here. But to omit Drive? I can't figure that at all.

Crush With Eyeliner (my favorite from Monster) and Bang and Blame were also worthy of being included, as they got quite a bit of radio and, in the case of Bang and Blame, constant play of the video on MTV.

Stipe seems to have bought into the myth that Monster was a horrible album. It wasn't.

Touche! I was just about to say the same thing. Been a big fan since '83 and I can't figure out why people hate Monster. I never had a problem with this recording at all... and I'm NOT against slamming REM. I've just about completely lost interest in them at this point actually thanks to "Reveal".

I have no problems with them trying to do a GH. Some people buy these things and then investigate more. Anyone who has heard a couple of their albums knows the best is spread out all over their career and all over their recordings, but these things can turn newbies on.

I love Reveal. There are some classics on there: Imitation Of Life, Reno, The Lifting, She Just Wants To Be.

Yeah there are a few good songs on their recent albums but the heart of this band is long gone. The shows even feel second rate because they've become one of those classic rock type bands where they have 3 original members and backing musicians. GOd I hate that. Feels like I'm seeing Procol Harem or something.

On October 28, you can look forward to R.E.M. title, In Time: The Best of REM 1988-2003. This collection will be released in several styles and formats, all on the same day. There will be a DVD version that will be issued in both Amaray and the increasingly popular DVD Jewel Case. Additionally, the set will be available as a CD standard issue and a 2CD Limited Edition. I agree 100% with your comment and LOVE that list. Find the River, Sitting Still and Fall on Me are three of my most favorite of their songs.

I enjoyed Monster...for me it got better and better with each listen. Of course, nothing can match the music we were treated to on Murmur, but I never thought that Monster was a horrible effort. Some of those tracks really rocked and I thought it was a nice transition from the melodic sound of Automatic.

Drive not being on the Greatest Hits album is a travesty. One of the best R.E.M. songs ever.

True. But the bonus disc looks great. Live Drive is better then no Drive.

Also, the band had to diversify the tracks. We could'nt have every track from AFTP. You could argue that 'Find the River' should have been on there as well.

We need either a smiley with a fishhook in it's mouth implying "I've been caught hook, line and sinker" or that picture of the money changing hands.

I was going to pass, but I'll be buying now with that bonus disc.

Also, for fans of the band who shelled out money for the import singles, this "bonus" disc isn't really much of a bonus. It actually makes me angry and wish that cd stores bought back import singles.

Im with you on that. Anytime I buy a "rare" "once in a lifetime" japanese single with two b-sides for $25 the band decides to release a b-sides collection.

I just spent a good deal of money on picking up a ton of radiohead imports and singles so expect an announcement from them any time soon.

Bonus disc tips the scale for me!

I agree "Drive" should be on there, but ya know, if you're any kind of REM fan at all you have to own "Automatic for the People" anyway, so it's not like I'll never hear "Drive."

I saw them in birmingham two nights ago and it was pretty freaking great. Anyone who has an interest in going to a show, i highly recommend it, especially if you enjoy the older stuff. They played Exhuming McCarthy, Driver 8, Rockville, Begin the Begin, These Days and Radio Free Europe to name a few. It was such a damn great show.

Yeah, I saw them in the Portland area earlier this month and it was a fantastic show, Stipe was totally in great form. Nice mix of old classics and the newer stuff that I've also enjoyed.

I'm going to see them tonight in Auburn Hills, MI. Can't wait!

I don't believe they've played Disturbance at the Heron House at any of their shows. Somebody who's going to see them needs to request that song. It needs to be played live again.

REM will be on the Late Show with David Letterman on Thursday. Possibly on Friday too. The past two times REM has been on the Late Show they've played on both days. For now, it's just listed as Thursday, but they tape two shows on Thursday, so maybe we'll get lucky again. My state isn't even on REM's tour, so I'd love to see them perform the new song and maybe one of the old songs that I've never seen them play live. Catapult or Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars) would be excellent choices.
