studio artists

does anyone know of any other artists that NEVER play live? the only one i can think of is Chris Mars - former drummer of The Replacements. He never tours, he justs puts out records, on which he plays (almost) every instrument. do record labels actually release music by studio only artists who are not already well known? i assume small indie labels only.

The reason i am asking is that i recently quit my band in nyc due to time constraints (being married/career/etc.) however, music is a love of mine and i will never give it up. so, when i buy/restore/build a house one day, a home recording studio will definitely be included.

anyone else here do this? if so, do you have pics of your studio and/or MP3's of your songs?

Steely Dan was pretty much a studio band when they were making records. They really didn't start touring until their most recent albums and even then their tours are very limited.

I used to have a fairly extensive home recording studio. I was running 24 tracks using four 8-track Alesis ADAT machines and a Soundcraft Ghost mixing console. Tons of outboard gear along with that as well. I traded all that in for a PC running Digidesign ProTools and the Digi 002 input racks. I kept my tube mic pre-amps and a couple of other outboard units but that's it, and it makes beautiful recordings with no limits on tracks.

XTC hasn't toured in around twenty years, yet they still keep producing albums.

Ayreon. I belive anyway. Due to the fact he plays almost every instrument on his albums.

He did get out with Star One though.

Forgot about the Beatles. Their last tour was before they went in to record Sgt. Peppers. So starting with SP and on, they were a studio band.
