The Velvet Underground: your favorite album and song?

I love the Velvet Underground as much as I love the Beatles. Their first 4 albums were amazing and all different from each other.
My favorite album of theirs is their 3rd LP, the self-titled one.

My favorite songs are (in order):
1. I'm Set Free
2. Venus in Furs
3. Heroin
4. Pale Blue Eyes
5. Sister Ray
6. Sunday Morning
7. Sweet Jane
8. Candy Says
9. White Light/White Heat
10. I'll be Your Mirror

Anyone else like the Velvet Underground?

My favorite VU record is probably Velvet Underground w/ Nico.

Favorite songs in no particular order: There She Goes Again, Sunday Morning, Pale Blue Eyes, White Light/White Heat (live - I'm not sure when this is from but it's fantastic), I Can't Stand It, I'll Be Your Mirror, Sister Ray, Beginning to See the Light, The Black Angel's Death Song, and Heroin.

I love the VU.

Favorite album...also the self-titled third one.

Favorite songs (in no real order except for the first one)...Sister Ray, I'm Waiting for the Man, Heroin, Beginning to See the Light, Pale Blue Eyes, Sunday Morning, Sweet Jane, Lonesome Cowboy Bill, Afterhours.

For me, it's a tie between Velvet Underground & Nico and the self-titled album. The former has better songs, but I can't stand Nico's voice at all. She ruins "I'll Be Your Mirror" for me - a shame because it's such a great song. I much prefer Reed's acoustic version off of his Perfect Night album, but that's just me. Moe Tucker would've been a much better choice for the song than Nico, IMHO.

And one of my all-time favorite songs of any artist and genre is "Pale Blue Eyes."

My other favorites of theirs: "Sunday Morning," "After Hours," "Who Loves the Sun," "I Love You," "Sweet Jane," "I'm Sticking With You," and "Heroin."

Albums:
1. Third album
2. VU and Nico
3. White Light/ White Heat
4. VU (it was supposed to be an album...)
5. Loaded

Songs:
1. What Goes On
2. Heroin
3. Sister Ray
4. Beginning to see the Light
5. All Tomorrow's Parties
6. Oh! Sweet Nuthin'
7. Foggy Notion
8. I'm Set Free
9. The Gift
10. Candy Says

F For Fake 08-25-03 02:56 PM

Well, I catch a lot of hell for this from my friends, but it's true:

"Loaded" is my favorite VU record
"Candy Says" is my favorite VU song.

And this usually gets me dirty looks:
I've never been a huge VU fan, though I do own all of their records...and I really prefer Lou Reed as a solo artist.

F For Fake 08-25-03 03:00 PM

Also, this thread seems funny to me, because I've been in a VU mood this weekend. I went to see the New Pornographers on Saturday (they were amazing, of course) and both of their opening bands (Young and Sexy who are touring with them, and Front Porch Campaign, who are local boys) did VU covers. Y&S opened with "I've Got a Reason" and FPC did "What Goes On"

Aphex Twin 08-25-03 03:16 PM

I love their new one that came out like last year - Hard to Explain.

gondorspit 08-25-03 04:02 PM

It's impossible to name a favorite VU song, but the ones I listen to the most: Stephanie says, Story of my Life, Sweet Jane, I Found a Reason, Sunday Morning.

I really like the Fully Loaded CD, all of the different versions of songs are fun to listen to.

The Exister 08-25-03 04:54 PM

White Light/White Heat, favorite album and song.

Cusm 08-26-03 12:10 PM

Albums:
White Light/White Heat
VU and Nico
VU (3rd album)

Songs:
Heroin (One of my top 5 all time songs)
Sweet Jane
Waiting for the Man
Candy Says
Sister Ray
Beginning to See the Light
Venus in Furs

Favorite VU cover
Bauhaus - Wating for the Man
Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane

I'll get flamed for this, but I really like Loaded. When I listen to the first disc of the deluxe edition, I can't help but think the album is perfect except for New Age. You go from Sweet Jane, to Rock and Roll, the two best cuts on the album to New Age, the worst.

Sweet Jane is my favorite song. I love the guitar segue at the beginning, like it's a dream or something.

majorjoe23 08-26-03 01:24 PM

Candy Says is my favorite song, Velvet Underground and Nico is my favorite album.

wendersfan 08-26-03 02:03 PM

My favorite Velvets album is 1969 Velvet Underground Live With Lou Reed. My favorite studio album is the third one. I couldn't even begin to name a favorite song. Beginning To See the Light, maybe.

Hollowgen 08-26-03 02:59 PM

VU & Nico, hands down. totally pleasant listen all the way through. nothing there that would throw anyone a curve, really.

Saw the Pornographers last night and Young and Sexy opened with the same song. When you saw them did the lead singer recite the spoken word intro to Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" ("Dearly beloved we are gathered here together...") in perfect time to the song? 'Cuz that happened last night. Made me laugh.

YES HE DID! I'd forgotten about that until you mentioned it. I enjoyed their set. I was broke so I couldn't pick up one of their cd's, but I will at some point.

We can form a club for "People Who Really Liked Loaded". I agree that the deluxe set is excellent.

Pretty hard question. I guess my favorite album is Velvet Underground (in all its different versions).

Favorite song varies, but I really like:
Pale Blue Eyes
I'm Sticking With You (perverse, but it cheers me up)
Waiting for the Man
Heroin (the Lou Reed version is better though)
Stephanie/Caroline/Candy Says (all the "says" songs)
Beginning to See the Light

and just about every other song, at one time or another.

Aphex Twin 08-28-03 02:10 PM

Well my favorite VU-related album has to be Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music. It's mind-numbling awesome. Blows away my mind and ears at every listen. Truly a cacophonous masterpiece.

I don't know how many people would join. It seems to me that people say that they don't like Loaded because it's a trendy thing to do. Kind of like saying you don't enjoy "Cut The Crap" by The Clash II or "An American Prayer" by Jim Morrision. Good music is everywhere, we should enjoy it.

Also, who else thinks Afterhours is a lovely tune? Moe sounds really great and candid on it :).

I've never liked Loaded much, sorry. I think my dislike for that album has lasted long enough that I'm not being "trendy" about it. Besides, I don't hate Loaded, I just don't like it as much as the rest of their albums. I don't like Live At Max's Kansas City that much, either...

Afterhours is one of my favorites. A band I was in used to do that one.

Brain Stew 08-29-03 10:31 AM

To each his own I guess :).

It just seems to me whenever a new person discovers Loaded, they may kind of like it, but when they hear that it's Lou's least favorite, they do not like it anymore. Lou's talented, but Loaded is better than some of his more recent albums.

Loaded's a very good album but it's no way better than their first 3 albums.

I didn't know Lou liked Loaded the least. I would venture a guess that it has more to do with his dislike of Doug Yule than his dislike of the album. In case you didn't know, Doug Yule, who replaced John Cale as the Velvets bass player after White Light/White Heat, was not inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with the other members of the Velvet Underground. This is the man who sang lead vocals on "Candy Says"!
