Metallica Sues Band Over Usage Of E, F Chords
Posted By Mindy Turner on 07.16.03

Just when you thought things couldn't get more bizarre.

According to MTV.com, Metallica are suing independant Canadian rockers Unfaith over what they call "unsanctioned usage of two chords [Metallica] have been using since 1982 : E and F."

"People are going to get on our case again for this, but try to see it from our point of view just once," stated drummer Lars Ulrich. He adds that they're not saying they own the two chords, individually - "that would be ridiculous" - just that in that specific order, people have grown to associate E, F with their music, and their continued usage in the same song causes "confusion, deception and mistake in the minds of the public."

You can read the whole surreal article here.

Metallica.com has issued an official statement on the subject here.

Actually, it's all just a joke. Try clicking on the MTV.com and Metallica.com links; they never leave the 411 domain or go to their respective locations.

I understand that, based on this lawsuit, Ted Nugent is filing suit against anyone using the key of A major.

I should work for Snopes I debunked this one so fast.

The links now don't work, I think they are afraid of copyright infringement and have taken down the files.

I'm going to hold off on judgement. Many bands have sued others for copying their music. But this does make metallica look bad.

The last good album was the black album. After that it has only been a few good songs and that is it. I think it's time to retire.

It may be a joke but I wouldn't be surprised if Lars would consider it if the right attorney proposed it to him.

I could've sworn there was going to be an Onion link when I read the thread title.

Clearly a spoof, guys. A funny one, too.

Anyone who is aware of Metallica's legal actions in the past could fall for this.

For the love of Satan, gimme a break.

I admit, Metallica have had there fair share of legal fun, but anyone who would fall for this is a certified nutcase.

If they were going to sue, it would be over the use of the 5th and 7th frets in general, geez folks, get a clue

First I had to check my calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st.

Now i'm just hoping Stevie Wonder doesn't sue for unsanctioned use of the key of "life"...

Is Johnny Cochran still busy with Spike Lee, or is he available since they reached a settlement in that actual case?
