Need help putting together mix CD

A bunch of friends and I go houseboating every summer, and I always put together at least a couple mix CDs that hopefully keep everyone happy for awhile. When the mix CDs aren't in, that means Kid Rock is, so I need to put together some solid mixes.

Rap doesn't go over too well, and neither does country. They also need to be upbeat, fun summer songs. I also like to make sure most of the songs are recognizable and relatively current, or it'll get rejected in a hurry.

Past success stories include mixes with Gorillaz, Atomic Fireballs, Cake, Alien Ant Farm and Jimmie's Chicken Shack.

The only decision I've made so far is that it will include Trailer Fabulous by Brooks Buford and probably Stacy's Mom by Fountains of Wayne.

Suggestions?? Thanks!!

Move Your Feet by Junior Senior -- should fit the bill perfectly

To bad they have to be recognizeable. They are a lot of great poppy songs in the vein of "Fountains of Wayne" My two faves are:

Astrid

Songs: "Tick Tock" and "Horror Movies"

Straw

Songs: "Aeroplane Song" "Soundtrack of the Summer"

They don't necessarily have to be "poppy", but songs with a sense of humor definitely go over better. Stuff like Blink 182, Green Day and Weezer all go over well. Puddle of Mudd "She Hates Me" is another good example of stuff that works.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

you got to add "She Don't Use Jelly" from the Flaming Lips then.

and if you can find it, it's old, but nonetheless "I Got A Girl" from Tripping Daisy.

they are a little more dance-y than you might like them to be, but they are infectious songs that make you want to move.

no compliation is complete until you add "You're One" from Imperial Teen - a very underrated band that write fun songs and have a load of energy.

Yeah, it's a tough balance between the guys who like mostly hard rock stuff, and the girls who like the more dance, poppy stuff. I'm thinking some Good Charlotte, OK Go, and Strokes will also be added.

Giles 07-16-03 01:21 PM

if you add the Strokes, than add "7 Nation Army" from The White Stripes - great song!

Giles 07-16-03 01:23 PM

oh and "Laid" - James

Giles 07-16-03 01:27 PM

If you like The Strokes check out a band called "Kings of Leon" they are being called the 'Southern Strokes' I only have an EP from them, which I like, but word is that the full length album "Youth and Young Manhood" is one of the best of the year (so far).

Giles' recommendations have been good. But I can't emphasize enough how perfect Junior Senior would be -- it's Michael Jackson + ABBA + early Beatles!

Also, you could satisfy several camps with the Strokes-Christina Aguilera mash-up "A Stroke of Genius."

Yancey, is this album as goofy as it sounds, Read a few fun reviews here and there, and if your endorsing it than it must definately warrant a listen (and/or purchase)

Will check it out, thanks. I agree the Junior Senior track is a fun tune. Thanks again!!

'Light and Day/Reach for the Sun' - Polyphonic Spree, the beginning of the song is actually featured in a tv commerical (which has escaped me at the moment), perfect summer song.
