Today's CDs (7/7/03)

Various Artists - "Invisible Shield" (K Records Comp)
Gossip - "Movement"
Broken Social Scene - "You Forgot it in People"
The Hidden Cameras - "The Smell of Our Own"
!!! - "Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard"

Q1:
Has anyone else heard that Hidden Cameras cd? Granted, it's so very gay that it's currently trying to have a bunch of gay sex with the other cds it's piled up with. A must listen for fans of Magnetic Fields, or at least people who would like Magnetic Fields if only they were 30 times more gay. At any rate, I'm really liking this album, but it's somewhat difficult to universally recommend.

Q2:
Has anybody seen Broken Social Scene live? They're playing here Wednesday. I should probably listen to the cd a bit more, but it hasn't grown on me yet.

Son Volt - Trace
Freedy Johnston - Right Between The Promises
Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory?
... Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes
Counting Crows - August and Everything After
Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head
Lyle Lovett - Anthology Vol. 1: Cowboy Man

Q1 & 2: No, although (1) I have "69 Love Songs" on my shelf unlistened to, and (2) I suspect I'd like to see Broken Social Scene in concert. But that doesn't really help you, does it?

FannyPack - So Stylistic (funnily enough, I realized just last week that I made out with one of the members of FannyPack at a party last year. Weird.)

Broken Social Scene are good live, Steve. You should see them.

So I'm getting laid off. Maybe today. Not fun.

Bummer. Hope you get some kind of severance at least.

Sorry to hear the bad news, Yancey. I know how crappy it feels.

Today:
Archers of Loaf - "Vee Vee"

The Clientele - "The Violet Hour" (I don't even think this comes out until tomorrow, but I found a copy at a record store around the corner from my apartment)

Echo and the Bunnymen - "Porcupine"

Giddy Motors - "Make it Pop" (they were supposed to be on my roommate's radio show this past weekend, but van and drug problems prevented that from happening)

Spacemen 3 - "Perfect Prescription"

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell (I was timid on buying this since I talked to 2 people that liked it and maybe 20 that hated it, but I saw a $9.99 copy and thought, "What the hell." Now it's one of my 2003 favorites.)
The Pixies - Surfer Rosa and Doolittle
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It in People (By the looks of the other lists, I've made it on the bandwagon.)
Contortions - Buy the Contortions

Yancey, that really sucks - best of luck to you. I did pick up Lightning Bolt and think it's spectacular. It and Fever to Tell have officially ****ed up my half-year album picks (knocking Mt. Eerie off, you might laugh to know. ) Unfortunately, I couldn't find Hold Your Horse Is, but if it's anything like Wonderful Rainbow, I'll buy it knee-jerk fashion.

I've also heard that Broken Social Scene puts on a great live show. And I'm interested to hear this Hidden Cameras band; I'm a mild MF fan.

Rhys Chatham - An Angel Moves Too Fast To See.

Found if laying on my porch this afternoon (guess UPS doesn't bother ringing the bell anymore...) and listened to the entire box (about 2 hrs 45 min) over the span of the evening.

So I'm gonna lose my job, but I dunno when yet. By the end of the month, for sure. It shouldn't be too bad -- I can survive on unemployment and freelancing for a while, but I'm already sending out resumes.

And glad that you grabbed the Lightning Bolt disc, fallow. And the Yeah Yeah Yeahs album is great too (the last four tracks might be the best sequence I've heard on a disc this year; rivalled only by the first four songs on the Cold album (and no, I'm not joking)). FIND HELLA! Try Insound or something. Or order it straight from 5RC. I'm telling you, it's a masterpiece. And did you ever get the last 90 Day Men record?

Anyway, today for me:

Luomo -- Present Lover
Animal Collective -- Here Comes the Indian
Testors -- Complete Recordings (1976-79)
Beehive and the Barracudas -- Dark Love
British Sea Power -- The Decline of British Sea Power
Death Cab for Cutie -- Transatlanticism

New Pornagraphers - Electric Version
Japan for Sale - Volume 3: shamelessly promoted by Dave Marsh a couple of weekends ago, he contributed to the CD and wrote the linear notes. fave track: POLYSICS "Black Out Fall Out"

I've seen the 90 Day Men album at the record store in my town, but I was deadset on getting Wonderful Rainbow. I might not be able to get it for a little while - I'm saving my money to order some stuff online. Eventually...it's 6th on a list. I have to be so damn economic now, I really feel like I'm 20 going on 50.

How is that Death Cab album? I've lost interest in them over time but it may perk back up with a new release.

To Everybody (the 90 Day Men record) should jump up high on your list. It's great. Just get it eventually.

Early thumbs down on the Death Cab.
