Stones to headline anti-SARS 'concert of the century'

ArtsCanada

TORONTO - The Rolling Stones will headline a nine-hour music event to boost the SARS-tainted image of Toronto, in what organizers are billing as the greatest concert of the century.

"People are going to gasp when they see the lineup," Toronto Liberal MP Dennis Mills told ArtsCanada, adding that an official announcement will be made Tuesday morning.

Mills hopes to attract 350,000 people to the event, with half of the tickets sold to the U.S. Tickets will be priced at $19.95.

Mills refused to comment on who will join the Stones for the July 30 concert, only saying that talent will come from across Canada, Europe and the United States.

"This is the concert of the century. I can tell you right now you will not challenge that once there's the formal announcement."

The event, which will run from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., will be staged at the Downsview Centre in Toronto - the same venue where the Pope held World Youth Day celebrations last summer.

"This is to antidote the international image out there that we are a leper colony," Mills said.

Proceeds, after expenses, and one dollar from every ticket sold will go to health care and hospitality workers.

The government will chip in $3.5 million to cover infrastructure expenses, with the private sector covering the rest of the $11 million price tag.

Mills said one goal is to fill the 95,000 hotel and motel spaces from Niagara to Oshawa during the event.

Mills said the event will also feature a huge barbecue to help promote Canadian beef in the wake of the discovery of mad cow disease in an Alberta cow.

For more arts news, listen to The Arts Report weekdays at 7:12 a.m., 8:12 a.m. and 5:55 p.m. on CBC Radio Two.

What is your source for this info? If this is true... I might have to make a road trip.

Ewwww! I hope the lepers enjoy their crappy concert.

Maybe they're in the process of confirming a few other bands. So far, the only impressive thing I see about this concert is that it's only $16. If I lived in Toronto, I'd go, purely because of the price, but I'm not really a fan of any of the bands they've announced.

It would definitely be nice if you are a Stones fan, though. I doubt anyone's been able to see them for $16 for years.

Gee ... why not just call it Concert of the Millinneum? It's really just Concert of the Last 3 Years either way. I guess since they'll all be dead in a few months from the plague, they won't have to defend the claim for the next 96 years.

Wonder if Timberlake will play with the Flaming Lips...he performed with them (dressed in an animal costume) on some British TV show (I think it was Top of the Pops).

Well since we are only in the third year of the century you shouldn't be missing much. We have another 97 years to have a concert of the century.

A few more have yet to be announced. U2 and Rush are still among the rumoured.

I won't be going because I couldn't give a **** about any of these musicians, but I hope it lives up to the hype and that the people who do go have a blast.
It's being held in the massive Downsview Park (not far from where I live), the same place where that Pope hoser twice presided over monumental gatherings (in '84 and '02).

For those living in Toronto or those who know the city, where will be the easiest place to park for this event? Is there a subway stop nearby that would give easy access? Thanks for any help.

According to the iam.ca site

"The Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto concert, featuring Rolling Stones, sets a single day record of 150,000 tickets."

that's pretty good first day sales
