Remastered versions of newer CDs (re: the Cure)

I just got the Cure - Trilogy DVDs in the mail and noticed it mentioned that remastered versions of several of their albums would be coming out in 2004. I love Disintigration, so if they can make it sound any better, count me in. Same with Pornography.

It also mentioned a remastered version of Bloodflowers, though. That album came out in 2000. You can't possibly tell me that CD mastering technology has advanced so greatly in three years that remastering this CD is necessary.

Is there some reason, other than "Cha-ching!," that a three year old album should be remastered?

No. Unless they're planning on doing something like SACD. If all they do is repackage and maybe tack on a bonus track or two,

The only time I've ever noticed an audible difference in sound quality was the recent Best of Bowie release. Some of the songs on that disc I'd only previously heard on vinyl and the remastered versions sounded fantastic. As the disc progressed nearer and nearer to the present, however, I couldn't notice a difference at all. The Heart's Filthy Lesson sounded exactly the same as it did when Outside was released in 1995.

I've also heard that the Doors remastered box set also sounds much better than the original releases or even the previous CDs, but I haven't picked that up yet.

I just don't see the point of remastering Bloodflowers. Maybe the discs are being released as a box set. Then they'd have to remaster all of them, so they could say "The Cure's Dark Trilogy - Remastered." I guess we'll see next year.

Has anyone heard a remastering of something that was released less than ten years ago and actually noticed a difference?

Supposedly the new mixes on the Nirvana Greatest Hits package are mindblowing.

The "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" CD has a song dropped off of it that appeared on the cassette and LP version ("Hey You") so they wouldn't have to release it as a dual-CD.

I found the re-mastering of Bloodflowers to be odd as well. The only explaination I could come up with is that The Cure are now signed to a new label, I Am Recordings/Artistdirect, and maybe the remastering of Bloodflowers along with the rest of the releases is to fulfill a contractual obligation to Warner.

We all know they have pretty much run the idea of doing greatest hits packages into the ground.

Kiss Me 3 was also listed along with Pornography, Disintergration and Bloodflowers as having digitally remastered versions coming in 2004
