This week's CDs (6/03)
Here's what I'll be pumping at work this week:
Fountains of Wayne - s/t Fountains of Wayne - Utopia Parkway v/a - Poptopia! Vols. 1-3 Charming - Champagne and Magazines Peter Gabriel - Up The Roots - Phrenology The Bad Plus - These are the Vistas Candy Butchers - Play With Your Head Candy Butchers - Falling Into Place Ok Go - s/t Big Star - #1 Record/Radio City Buena Vista Social Club - s/t O.A.R. - In Between Now & Then Flogging Molly - Drunken Lullabys v/a - Ocean's 11 soundtrack Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out The Raspberries - Capitol Collectors Series v/a - 24 Hour Party People soundtrack Johnny Cash - At San Quentin Pulp - This Is Hardcore I really thought SAShepherd's question from last week was a great idea, so I'll repeat it: QOTD -- Offer your comments on the previous poster's listening selection. Let's keep it clean, just something like,(for example) "I think the new Jayhawks is really watered down," "that's my favorite Yo La Tengo album," or "never heard of any of those artists." |
no music this week that i'm interested in but off the first posters list i'd like to say that Drunken Lullabies has consistently been in my my personal rotation ever since it came out... man i love Flogging Molly.

Sigur Ros - ()
Roots - Phrenology Beatles - Past Master Volume 2 Talib Kweli - Quality Jurassic 5 - Quality in Numbers Ee - For 100 We Try Harder Jesus and Mary Chain - Automatic Clueless Soundtrack Blur - Blur |
early Basement Jaxx materal/songs album:
"Atlantic Jaxx Recordings: A Compliation" can't wait to rush out of here at work and pick up the new Eels album! |
Blur- Think Tank
Deftones-Deftones The Postal Service- Give Up Interpol-EP Pearl Jam-Yield Manic Street Preachers- Holy Bible |
I'm going to be taking in some live bootlegs that I got last semester and haven't been able to listen to yet.
Miles Davis and John Coltrane - 6/8/60 - Zurich, Switzerland Frank Zappa - 10/27/73 - Austin, TX Beck - 9/5/97 - New York, NY Tortoise - 1/11/03 - Metro - Chicago, IL Pavement - 4/21/97 - Missoula, MT Sonic Youth - 10/14/87 - Chicago, IL Flaming Lips - 8/8/02 - KCRW Studios - Santa Monica, CA Tom Waits - 1/31/75 - Santa Monica, CA The Talking Heads - 2/27/81 - Tokyo, Japan As far as The Postal Service goes, I think that "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" is the best song of the Gibbard/Tamborello collaboration, but "(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan" outdoes the rest of that disc. That song is damn good. I don't have that Interpol EP, but I have heard "The Specialist" which is a good song, and I own the LP so I know the other 2 songs as well - "PDA" and "NYC", right? Anyway, I love all 3 songs. I've never followed Blur very closely - outside of a few great singles - but my friend bought Think Tank and says he likes it a whole hell of a lot. Maybe I'll borrow it one day, but it isn't a priority by any means. -edit to add- I forgot about the concerts I have on my computer as well: one Modest Mouse show, two Mogwai shows, one Jeff Tweedy show, and one Wilco show. |
Fountains of Wayne - Utopia Parkway
Built to Spill - Keep It Like A Secret Bruce Springsteen - The Rising Aimee Mann - I'm With Stupid R.E.M. - Reckoning Let's see... haven't heard any of fallow's live bootlegs (natch), but I think the ones that would interest me most are (in order): Miles/Coltrane, the Talking Heads, and Beck. The Pavement is probably too late in their career for me, and the Sonic Youth is too early (pre-Daydream Nation, right?). And, can't go wrong with Tweedy and/or Wilco... |
Fountains of Wayne - S/T
Josh Joplin Group - The Future that Was Garage a Trois - Emphasizer Trey Anastasio - Plasma Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus The Gourds - Shinebox Like most of what SAShepard's listening to, particularly the FoW and BtS records. I do think the Rising is pretty overrated but realize not many share that opinion. |

I love both Josh Joplin Group discs. Useful Music (their debut) is a bit more experimental...more effects, etc. The Future that Was is a bit more straightforward and a bit more pop. The lyrics are great on both albums.
I'd highly recommend their stuff...based upon what you listen to, you'd probably really like them. They're one of the few bands that I get excited about nowadays. |
Blur-Think Tank
The Dandy Warhols-Welcome to the Monkey House The Cardigans-Long Gone Before Daylight |
Radiohead-Pablo Honey
Radiohead-The Bends Radiohead-OK Computer Radiohead-Kid A Radiohead-Amnesiac HAIL TO THE THIEF NEXT WEEK! |
The Go-Betweens - "Spring Hill Fair"
Lilys - "Precollection" Television - "Adventure" The new Lilys album is spotty, but there are a few great tracks among the clunkers. Stevevt, what do you think? |
Originally posted by mike1978 Stevevt, what do you think? I have that Go-Betweens, too. I should give that a listen tomorrow. |
Jane's Addiction - Strays (so good to hear new stuff from these guys)
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating in Space Blue Man Group - The Complex Ash - Intergalactic Sonic 7s Cave In - Antenna Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People Earlimart - Everyone Down Here Nina Nastasia - Run To Ruin The Decemberists - Castaways and Cutouts The Wrens - Meadowlands Haven't heard the older Go-Betweens album, but I have Bright Yellow, Bright Orange and find it to be very catchy. |
So what is up with The Blue Man Group? Is it worth listening to?
|
The Blue Man Group CD is ok, nothing spectacular. There are some tracks that are interesting, but if you've seen any of their shows you won't be surprised.
|
I like the first Blue Man Group CD a lot. The presence of guest vocalists on the new one is completely uninteresting to me.
|
"The Animatrix" Soundtrack
"The Matrix: Reloaded" Score Robin Williams: Live 2002 "A Rush of Blood To The Head" - Coldplay And more I'm sure... |
Add Metallica's St. Anger. Releasing on the 5th (instead of next week) due to it being leaked onto the net the other day.
|
I caved in on my promise, "No new music until I land a job!" when I found Enon's High Society and REM's Murmur at decent prices in a record store almost an hour away. Oooh, if only the record stores around here would carry that, I wouldn't have broken myself.
But they are both great, so I can't complain too much. |
