Best Soundtrack?

Good soundtracks enhance the mood of a film and usually evoke memories of a film while they're on. Unfortunately, most soundtracks nowadays are throwaway pop/rock compilations that really don't reflect the mood of the film at all. Anyway, here are some of the best ones I own...

Pulp Fiction/Jackie Brown/Reservoir Dogs (Tarentino puts amazing soundtracks together)
Rushmore
The Rules of Attraction
The End of Violence
Good Will Hunting
Office Space (gangsta rap worked surprisingly well in this film)
Trainspotting

Michael T Hudson 05-10-03 09:19 PM

Top Gun and Days of Thunder and Footloose.

fallow 05-10-03 10:09 PM

I'll second Trainspotting, Rushmore, and The Rules of Attraction. I'll also add The Royal Tenenbaums.

the movie isn't all that deep nor is it one of the best British comedies, the strength of the movie is in it's casting, Dan Futterman, Kate, and Stuart are great and lead themselves in one of the quirkiest films - I'd recommend it (give it shot).

More of a score than a soundtrack, but still an excellent choice. It's a great piece of work that's constantly ripped off.

24 Hour Party People takes the cake for me, classic tracks beginning to end.

Rushmore had some amazing, somewhat forgotten choices and revitalized "I am Waiting", my favorite sleeper Rolling Stones song.

Grosse Point Blank had some great tunes.

Pulp Fiction is still great.

Natural Born Killers is one of the better things Trent Reznor ever did and very few people have it, their loss.

Style Wars has a great selection of rare early hip-hop, so does Scratch.

Dogtown and Z-Boys is chock-a-block full of 70s classics.

Almost Famous is the only movie I can think of that's got Led Zepplin in it (other than Fast Times). It's also full of great songs. Camron Crowe has some serious pull in the industry.

I agree on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack also...don't know why that didn't end up on my list.

Lots of good ones mentioned and Grunter's "Pretty In Pink" reference reminded me of "She's Having A Baby". Excellent 80's s/t.

Led Zep songs are almost impossible to get for soundtracks. On the commentary for Almost Famous, Crowe talks about what he had to go through to get them ("That's the Way", "Misty Mountain Hop", etc). Still, he couldn't get "Stairway to Heaven" for an important scene.

There are some directors out there that do great jobs incorporating source music into their film's soundtrack, using just the right song at the right time to great effect, such as Tarantino (all his films), Danny Boyle (esp. Trainspotting), Roger Avary (esp. Rules of Attraction) ,PT Anderson (esp. Boogie Nights) and Wong Kar Wai.

I'm so with Grunter with the "Pretty in Pink" soundtrack.

But personally, one of my 80's favorites is "Some Kind of Wonderful". I still have spells where I will pop the tape in.

You got ALL THREE of mine! Something about those John Hughes soundtracks. I think I read on the liner notes for Somekind of Wonderful that he wanted to thank all the artists for creating songs that perfectly embodied the mood for the scene each was in.

Did anyone know that when Howard Deutch reshot the end of Pretty in Pink (if was supposed to have the ending that Somekind of Wonderful ultimately had) that OMD had to re-write their song in two days - and then "If You Leave" became their most successful hit? Wierd.
