Best tamborine in a song?
Naturally you can point out the greats like Day Tripper or He Jude, and I even like the tamborine in the song Pretty Mary Sunshine from the Scooby Doo cartoons.
But what other great tamborine songs are there? I could have mentioned a few songs by the Monkees, but I want to try to keep this thread serious. |
I think those songs needed more cowbell.
|
Cowell and tamborine together? That would be awesome!
|
He Jude? I'm not familiar with that piece.
Though, HUGE props for liking Pretty Mary Sunshine. Great song. |
Nenah Cherry - Buffalo Stance

Greatest use of the Jew's harp?
Without it, you couldn't get the full twang out of your country music, unless it also had a banjo, dulcimer, harmonica, dobro fiddle OR mandolin. I daresay Bon Jovi's "blaze of Glory" was defined by its excellent use of the Jew's harp.
What other great Jew's harp songs are there? |
It has a nice spotlight somewhere in the middle of "Black Girls" by the Violent Femmes.
|
Didn't Tenille play the tamborine? I think the Captian was jealous of her talent.

One of the top 'rine shakers around would have to be Tracy Partridge. She made the music magical.

I think Derek was the child porn guy, and interestingly enough he also wailed on the tamborine. I'm not saying all tamborine players were into child porn, but it does make you think. |
I always think of that Charlie Brown cartoon -- not sure if it's Charlie Brown Christmas or another one -- where Snoopy kept twanging away on it annoying everyone.

Best use of Theremin in a song?
Since we're singling out instruments I'd like to add the Theremin to the mix.
The song that everyone thinks of is "Good Vibrations" by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. But what others used the instrument? Apparently it's very hard to control the sound. At least that's what I heard when I saw the docu on the man and the instrument he invented. http://www.dvdspotlight.com/dvd/movies/images/6856.jpg The film "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and other sci-fi flicks also used the Theremin. |

It makes you think. http://www.garyglitter.8m.com/gp1.jpg |
I saw it [theremin] played once on the Today Show on NBC, and they said that no one truely knows how to play it [theremin] well, they just do what sounds right. It [theremin] is such a hard and unpredicable instrument. I know it [theremin] has a unique sound, but could probably not pick it out of a recording.

Phish's Page McConnell used to play Somewhere over the Rainbow on theremin. It was actually pretty beautiful.

Jew's Harp:
The Who - Join Together |
i think the politically correct name for it nowadays is "mouth harp" ;)
|
i really enjoyed Charlie Clouser using it during "Sin" at the NIN shows i've seen.

Now that all of these small, yet vital instruments have been placed into the same thread I must ask that everyone is specific about what small, yet vital instrument they were referring to.
Note the three posts above have me . |
I feel befouled.
On the other hand, I have a thread promoted to a "one and only" status. Who wants to touch me? Please? :D |
