where's DAFT PUNK?
 

what's up with this band. Even though their last album came out in 2001 - both Manuel De Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter have been rather quiet. I know that Thomas was involved with the score for the film "Irreversable." I remember reading at the time of "Discovery" release that there was mention that all the songs were to be released as seperate singles, each with exclusive remixes, alas this was only a rumour. Given the fact that the first and second album are three years apart, maybe this is an indication that the third album from Daft Punk will come out in 2004 (?) Heres' to hoping.

I saw the advance for Irreversible from Thomas Bangalter available on soulseek.

anyone else think that these two clowns are completely overrated?

i mean, they seem to combine all the bad elements of techno into one, nicely marketed piece of crap. as a result, every 14-year old in north america now loves techno.

minimalist techno, while at some times boring, was at least well put together, and ground breaking at the time it was introduced. sure, the beats and riffs were all looped to hell, but you had to admire, say, the utah saints, for trying something totally different in the age of rock (rawk).

all of a sudden, techno breaks, and everyone in the world is back to loving the u.k. and saying how they've always loved techno. they then follow up this statement with "daft punk are one of my favorite bands."

why? what is it you like about them?

their songs are boring at best. they're far from being well written, or constructed. in the end, they're just pop crap that appeals to the new techno fans because it's nice and ear friendly.

really, what has france ever given us?

France gave us Air.

Where does Daft Punk stand in regards to the historical significance of techno? How original are they? I don't really care... I absolutely LOVE the way they sound. Very catchy.

As a rabid collector of all things electronically musical, and a brother of a Moonshine Music recording artist, I've been into the scene for just over 14 years. I love both of Daft's albums, especially the latter. The last two tracks on Discovery are my favorite of all their tunes (Too Long, Face To Face). Sure, some tracks have a slight element of "cheese", but they have quite a unique sound and don't take themselves too seriously. I can see why Aphex Twin (on this board) might not be a big fan. Don't get me wrong, because I love AFX. Daft's tunes are nowhere as complex as Richard James' cuts, but I don't listen to them expecting them to be. If I want more 'sophisticated' tunes, I'll throw on some Squarepusher...if I want to wiggle my a**, I'll toss on some "High Life" or "Indo Silver Club" and get down.

I've liked 'em since I first saw the vid for "Da Funk" on Much Music [back when it was WORTH watching]. IMO Homework is good, but Discovery is MUCH better.

Aphex Twin AKA Richard D. James created some of the most boring total minimalist sounding techno I've heard. I would much rather listen to Daft Punk's bouncy sound than the sound of a clock ticking, a theremin and a metronome remixed and looped together- believe me I know- I had the 2 collected Ambient Works and whatever that Daddy album was . And what are you talking about Utah Saints being minimalist? Their first 2 albums were total dance, like KLF. Theirs and Daft Punk's albums are much better produced than any of that minimalist-lets-dink-around-with-a-sampler-and-a-tin-can-in-my-basement crud.
It sounds like you have an elitist anger that techno has been "discovered," but don't worry- the mainstream will never get into your Aphex Twin and Plastikman.
You say the minimalist and un-"nice and ear friendly" sound is what the refined techno listener will eventually graduate to and the dancy stuff is for all the newbs. Not true- I've been listening since Kraftwerk and Art of Noise, both artists that went for the beat and both innovators of techno.

now hold on here, we are all entitled to our own opinions here, and while I don't think it's fair for Aphex Twin to be thread crapping, it's his opinion that Daft Punk are perceived as "two overrated clowns" - so be it, but I do have to agree with warcp that comparing bands like Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, Art of Noise with Daft Punk and other techno bands is unfair - all of them have a unique style and sound.

Personally I found the new Four Tet album to be tedious and the latest Plaid a major disappointment. The genre is going to have it's rotten apples from now and then, but to be overcritical and make rash overgeneralized statements about such and such band/dj is non-productive and one-sided.

I don't have a problem with ANYONE's opinion. I DO have a problem when they try to pass their OPINION off as FACT.

I'm not saying that's happened in this thread, it's just a pet peeve i've developed visiting DVD Talk.

To answer your question, they worked with Leiji Matsumoto on turning the music videos for Discovery into a full-length film, "Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem." I haven't seen it, but the reviews are fantastic. DVD came out on 12/02/03, in some countries with a bonus b-side CD, "Daft Club."

As MuTajiri, noted Daft Punk is gearing up for a raft of new releases shortly.

Daft Punk is a terrific techno-pop group in my book with a great sense of humor, flawless production and editing and some truly amazing beats.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Thomas Bangalter helped put the funk back into house music. The man is a genre in and of himself. When I think of the electro porn sound that is Filter house, I think of Stardust, I think of Daft punk, and I think of Together, all bands of Thomas Bangalter. Just because an artist goes mainstream isn't a reason to hate them.

I love Daft Punk because their music is fun and listening to it makes me happy. Their first disc is currently in my CD player along with Mates of State, The Shins, Lamb, Guided by Voices, Black Star, and Modest Mouse.

On a side note, did you guys know that Élodie Bouchez, who was in "Dreamlife of Angels" and "CQ" is married to one of the Daft Punk guys?

the 5.1 DTS/Dolby Digital soundmix is a bitter disappointment, anyone looking for an agressive soundmix a la Flaming Lips (DVD Audio), Super Furry Animals (Rings, Phantom DVD's), Orbital's 'The Altogether' (R2 DVD) will find it a major let down. The soundtrack feels like the soundmixers just threw the sound elements onto film without a care or knew how to take advantage of six channels of sound... phooey!

My two boys (3 and a half and 2) both love the video. They request it from time to time. I'm the only reason why my wife even knows about Daft Punk.

By the way, the guy who did the Around the World video among many others, Michel Gondry, has a DVD out about his work ...

I was in Best Buy today and was surprised to see "Daft Club" out, a remix album basically, but for for only $11.99 MSRP, not a bad purchase.
