The beatles post reminded me of Eddie Vedder doing You've Got to hide your love away.

And it is very powerful within the context of the film 'I Am Sam'

Oh, hell yeah. That was horrible. America ashamed me when it became a big #2 hit.

The worst cover ever

So I was listening to a streaming broadcast and was treated to a cover of Stayin' Alive (Bee Gees).

By Ozzy Osbourne

Yes, that Ozzy. Yes, it was completely terrible. Ozzy ain't known for his Gibb type range either.

It was awful. I think it might be the worst thing I ever heard. My dog looked at me as if to say "that doesn't sound right". He left the room. And I don't blame him.

I've always gotten a kick out of:
Phish - Gin & Juice

Great song with completley different music, but same lyrics. I highly reccomend hearing it to fans of the original (Snoop Dogg).

Phish never covered this song. It was mislabeled on Napster years ago, and the confusion continues...

The cover you're thinking of is by the Gourds (who, IMO, are one of the best bands on the planet - along with Phish).

I really like GN'R's version of "Knockin on Heaven's Door". Slash's solos were amazing. When Axl toured briefly with the new lineup, they covered it closer to the Dylan original. I prefer the original cover they did.

The Black Crowes' version of Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle" is (and I'm a big Otis fan) better than his original. I also think Tesla's cover of Five Man Electrical Band's "Signs" is superior, but both are good.

Sinead O' Connor - "Nothing Compares to You" (Prince). I thnk this song is best sung by one person, instead of back and forth between a man and woman in the Prince version.

Almost any cover by Eva Cassidy, especially "Fields of Gold", "Time After Time", "American Tune", and "Over the Rainbow". She had an absolutely angelic voice, and she did simple yet beautful reinterpretations of songs that were often done originally by singers with great, distinctive voices (Cyndi Lauper, Judy Garland, Sting and Bill Withers to name a few). It's a shame she didn't get much attention until after her death

Other good ones
Mariah Carey - "I'll Be There" (orig. by The Jackson Five)
Jeff Buckley's - "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen)
Early Beatles r&b covers like "Twist and Shout" and "Roll over Beethoven"
The Sundays - "Wild Horses" (The Rolling Stones)
Nirvana's Meatpuppets covers on the Unplugged album
Alison Krauss - "When You Say Nothing at All" (Keith Whitley)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Higher Ground" (Stevie Wonder)

....and many others. Those were just off the top of my head.

On a side note, I hope I never hear another cover of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi" ever again. I'll take the original, thank you.

Like said above - Knockin OHD is very good (as well as Down on the Farm) by GnR....I absolutely cannot stand Turn The Page by Metallica...Seger did it the best that song could be done.

There are two cover versions that I love playing to Led Zep fans ..

Dread Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
(for the unititiated, Dread Zeppelin does reggae versions of Led Zep songs, with the frontman doing an Elvis imitation. It needs to be heard to be believed.)

Frank Zappa - Stairway to Heaven
(this is from the live album, "The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life", and this version of Stairway to Heaven has a brass band (on acid?) doing the song.)

BEST:
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - Are a Drag...an entire album of punky showtune covers! Genius! Their other albums aren't bad either, but this is their greatest.
Goldfinger - 99 Red Balloons, More Today Than Yesterday (guilty pleasures)
The (International) Noise Conspiracy - Baby Doll
Save Ferris - Come On Eileen
Ben Folds Five - She Don't Use Jelly

WORST:
This list could go on forever, so I'm just not going to start.

This rules

As for covers of Hair of the Dog, I like the GnR version, as well as the Britney Fox one. It's just such a cool riff, you can't go wrong.

For a pretty recent one - Scissor Sister's version of Comfortably Numb. Even after hearing it several times, I have no idea if it's one of the best covers of all time or a total abomination. It's definitely one of those two, though.
