Who the hell are Good Charlotte and why are they on the cover of Rolling Stone?
 

I know RS no longer has any thing to do with real music but usually I've heard of the bands on the cover. Is this a Blink 182 wanna be band or a Linkin Park wanna be band?

I would say they are more like a Blink wannabe, even though I enjoy their music.

Because RS sucks. Have you seen the documentary on Wilco, IATTBYH? Senior Editor of RS, David Fricke, is on there talking too much. What a brickhead he is.

I pretty much lost all my respect for RS when they rated A perfect Circles debut album a half star lower than Britney Spears new record lol. I still subscribe though, but I enjoy reading their non music related journalism better. You can't really win with these mags though. I get spin too, but it's the complete opposite. They hate anything that is remotely popular or well known, and boost independent garbage (most of it is anyway) or semi more than it should. They are funny though hehe.

I haven't gotten that impression from SPIN. Seems to me they feature mainstream water too much, as well. To give them credit, though, they do some good articles every now and then.

I wouldn't actually pay money or waste my time reading any music magazine.

No American music magazine that is widely distributed is worth consideration.

If you want to read some of the last vestiges of what music journalism should be, look to English mags like Mojo and Q.

Seriously, I just let my subscriptions to Rolling Stone and Spin run out a few months ago. I don't miss either one. Both pander to a mainstream audience...Spin just as much as RS. However, Spin pretends to be hip and cutting edge. It's not, and its attempt to appear "underground" is even worse to me than RS placing Britney Spears and Shakira on the cover of its "Women in Rock" issue (Britney may be a lot of things, but rock she ain't). I'm agreeing with Alyoshka on this one...the Internet and my friends are a much better source of recommending worthwhile music than any music magazine (no matter which country it's from).

They are the band that sold their soul to MTV. They seem to be getting lots of airplay. I can tolerate the music, it's decent...some stuff. I'm just glad they host the "All things Rock" show on MTV. It's the RARE chance of seeing somewhat rock music since my cable provider took away my MTV Rock station and replaced it with MTV Jamz *ugh*

I totally agree with that statement. Mojo is a very classy magazine and really panders to people who know something about music. Q is great too although they seem to get a bit sensasionalist at times. The magazine Blender completely rips off many of the articles stylings of Q.

I think the former editor of Maxim recently took over the position at Rolling Stone and that is why they have sunk to having cover shots of half naked women who really don't have that much musical talent but just look really good half naked.

Aren't Good Charlotte the band where the singer uses a fake British accent while singing? Man, there is nothing more stupid than singers using fake accents.

Same here. I really have little interest in reading about music and movies in general (at least reviews anyway) as I really don't care about other's opinons on these.

That said, even their good non-music stories have been few and far between in recent months and I'm not renewing this time.

There are PLENTY of independent, American zines that spread the word of good music. Hit List, Carbon 14, Razorcake, Under the Volcano and the Big Takeover are the first few that immediately come to mind. Available at any Tower Records or Borders Books.

The Big Takeover would be the one that would most appeal to the people who enjoy the more lengthy articles that are found in Mojo & Q.

Carbon 14 is great! Porn, punk rock, and pro-wrestling. Can't go wrong with those!

I agree with the comments about Q and Mojo. Both are great informative reads.

Blender is OK as far as mass-market magazines go, at least they actually review a fair number of records each issue.

Good Charlotte is teeny pop made to look like punk rock. Rolling Stone sold out a loooooooong time ago.

Q is a terrible magazine, if it's not British rock it's crap to them.

GC is good if you don't try to take them for any more than playful mall-pop-punk. Not every CD has to be this mind-blowing pinnacle of artistic merit.

If artistic merit is a factor for musical taste, then it is perfectly reasonable that someone would tear down a dull band like GC. However, if you don't care about that and you are into the instinctual hooks (albeit boring hooks if you ask me), then that is fine too. Let's not resort to slapping everyone with a tag though, hmm?

As a sidebar, I go to college with a girl that dated the two singers in GC. That "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" song is idolizing lower-class life (?, I'm not sure I haven't paid too much attention to it), but she told me that they grew up in the decidedly upper-class area of town in a huge house. Down and out, indeed!

No, but why would I waste my money buying their cd (and supporting bad art at that) or waste my time listening to their music? There are hundreds of bands I still haven't got to hear which could blow this music away. I'd rather support those artists, thanks.

All I know about Bad Charlotte is that they are MTV whores! :up:
