Good Acoustic Cd's?
 

What are some really good all-acoustic cd's? I haven't really found too many acoustic cd's from where I have seen. I have the Dashboard Confessional's cd which features just acoustics, but thats about it. Any suggestions?

My all-time favorite acoustic album is Gerald Collier's I Had To Laugh Like Hell. Great stuff for drinking alone.

If you dig Robyn Hitchcock, Eye is quite good. But he's not everyone's cup of tea.

Off the top of my head:

Iron & Wine "The Creek Drank the Cradle" (one of the best albums of last year!)

Mark Kozelek "What's Next to the Moon" (the guy from Red House Painters doing stunning acoustic versions of AC/DC songs)

Grant-Lee Phillips "Ladies' Love Oracle" (for the most part, an acoustic-feeling album with some great tunes, recorded in Jon Brion's basement)

Elliott Smith "Roman Candle" and "Elliott Smith" (it's Elliott Smith without any backing band; both albums having songs featured in Good Will Hunting)

I'll post more when I can think of them, since I dig acoustic albums so much!

Alice in Chains- Jar of Flies and Sap. And their unplugged performance of course.

Eric Clapton- Unplugged

ANYTHING from the late great Micheal Hedges.

The new Beck disc is pretty damn good.

"Nebraska" by Bruce Springsteen is all acoustic except for the song "Open All Night", which is just Springsteen singing and playing electric.

Nick Drake's Pink Moon has only vocal, acoustic guitar, and piano.

"You, Me, Us?" is a Richard Thompson double album that has one disk of all-acoustic songs, titled "Nude", and another disk with full band, titled "Voltage Enhanced".

agreed. Especially the Mark Kozelek album - which brings me to add basically the entire Red House Painters catalogue (not EVERY song is acoustic, but I'd say 90 %)

Also, one of my favourite bands ever, Dakota Suite. I love all their albums, if i had to pick, I guess Id say start with "Alone With Everybody" and "Songs For The Barbed-Wire Fence")

(Note: 3 of their albums are purely instrumental ("Signal Hill", "Navigator's Yard", "The Way I Am Sick") but not any less fascinating)

Are you possibly thinking of an album other than "Signal Hill?" It's playing in my room right now, and I hear vocals. :)

Opeth's new CD "Damnation" is all acoustic I'm pretty sure. Its gonna be released later this month. It should be good.

Alice In Chains - Unplugged

I can't believe no one's listed Paul Westerberg "Stereo"!!! Great, great acoustic CD. Comes with a bonus "Mono" disk, containing more rockin' electric music.

Also, Steve Poltz "Answering Machine" (www.flash.net/~ted23/scamrama.html) has 60 acoustic songs recorded from his outgoing messages on his answering machine.

Steve Poltz (www.poltz.com) was the leader of the Rugburns and is more famous for being the guy who gave Jewel her start (he cowrote "You Were Meant For Me" and a couple other songs, and played regularly in her band). He has a new solo album on the way, Answering Machine Ver 2.0 coming soon, and an older solo album ("One Left Shoe"). I think there's samples of his songs on his site. If not, check the message boards for links to concerts/songs online.

All Rugburns releases are also "must haves" if you like acoustic music that can be sometimes irreverent. Seen them over 100 times when they existed and they are more "punk" than most of the kiddie bands popular right now who claim to be "punk" these days.

Gregory Page (www.gregorypage.com) was the bassist for the Rugburns. He has MANY good acoustic CDs. The best is "The Romantic Adventures of Harry", a classic. gregory has one of the best voices!

Gregory is also in another acoustic band called "The Hatchet Brothers" who have 2 CDs out. More rowdy than his solo stuff, mostly covers, but very good stuff.

Also, don't forget to check out Ann Berretta's "The Other Side Of the Coin" and their side project, Foundation.

Whoa - another Steve Poltz fan! I loooooove One Left Shoe - just an excellent disc. It usually doesn't leave my car changer in the summertime (it has that kind of feel). Been meaning to pick up the answering machine disc forever, but haven't gotten around to it. I'm really looking forward to the new album.

I also like Poltz's girlfriend (if they are still going out), Anya Marina. She's got some nice, quirky songs. I love her duet with Steve, "If It Feels Right." Her site says she's working on her album, as well. You can listen to her stuff here.

Trinity Session by The Cowboy Junkies. Awesome acoustic recording (with awesome acosutics ha ha) that's just, er, awesome. If your hi-fi is up to it I think it's one of the best, most detailed recordings out there.

You should put the acoustic version of "Shallow" or "Rest of My Life" on there instead of "Seeing Red". (unwritten law)
