Does Al Green suck?

I just found this strange and amusing web-site: http://www.watermelonpunch.com/algreensucks/

it's weird. Whenever he's on Letterman he sings the whole song but I've never been to a live Al Green show so I can't speak.

 POPPYCOCK!!! Al Green is like one of the best Soul singers of alltime, he's right up there with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Earth Wind & Fire ect...

slop101 03-18-03 03:00 PM

No.

All of his songs kind of sound the same.

But, no, he does not suck.

Gil Jawetz 03-18-03 03:09 PM

Click on the link. Those are fans who are saying he sucks because his concerts are apaprently rip-offs these days.

That's an interesting website. I'd be kind of miffed if I spent $60 for a ticket and had mostly a sing along with the audience. I hate concerts where the musician is begging the audience to sing or shout.

DVDHO 03-18-03 07:20 PM

Its music you make babys to,so for that reason it doesnt suck.

Al Green is fantastic. As far as I'm concerned, after the death of Otis Redding he was the embodiment of Memphis soul.

modiman 03-18-03 09:44 PM

Al Green rocks. If you can put on Love and Happiness and not get down, you've got some problems. He's put out some real good stuff.

Gil Jawetz 03-18-03 11:57 PM

I've got some problems regardless of what I think of Al Green.

His records are fantastic, no doubt about it. I was wondering if anyone, hwoever, had had similar crummy experiences with his concerts like those on that site.

atlantamoi 03-19-03 07:38 AM

It doesn't matter how great someone's history or catalogue is if they come out and charge $60 bucks while playing a 45-minute sing-along concert. Al Green's music is amazing. I have a few of his recordings, but I'd be very miffed if his concerts are like what is posted on that site. Having said that, I don't think I'd waste that kind of money on ANY "old" star and think I'd be seeing the same thing from 30 years ago.

conscience 03-19-03 10:36 AM

Wouldn't his concerts be rip-offs since he doesn't sing all of the "love" songs now that he preaches?

And 99.99 % of his songs were "love" songs.

atlantamoi 03-19-03 10:53 AM

conscience, I think he digs back into his love songs. He's performed a couple of times at a big Atlanta festival and did those old hits.

Al Green is a wife beater.

Al Green IS soul music !

But I can remember buying his "Live In Tokyo" album many years ago and not being too impressed for the very reasons listed above.

When I bought it, I had hoped that it would be on a level with Isaac Haye's "Live at the Sahara Tahoe" (another fave), but it was heavily peppered with his shouts of "Say Yeah !" and 'Sing with Me!" throughout and lacked any of the feel and groove of the studio albums.
