"Jerusalem" from off the Chariots of Fire soundtrack, for me is such a powerful song.

"And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold:
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land."

It probably isn't the same version, but Emerson, Lake, and Palmer include this on "Brain Salad Surgery" It's the album opener.

Black - PJ... so much emotion when it gets to those last lines...

I hope someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, why
Why, wwwhhhyyyyy
Can't it be
Can't it be in Miiiinnnneeee!!
Miiinnnneee...

But the best is those few performances (including MTV unplugged) where after that, he adds the:

We...
We belong...
We belong together, together
We
We belong
Together

It's probably not even in my top ten PJ songs, but man it can still get me.

a lot of good reponses - this woman's work, clapton - great list.

a lot of the mentioned can make me emotional, the worst one i think for me personally is mahler's 5th symphony.

Joni Mitchell's "River". Travis (Fran Healy) also did a very moving cover of this song.

I was just trying to figure this out this week LOL - needed a tearjerker song for a little movie I was making

So off the top of my head:

Hallelujah (John Cale version)
Someone Like You (Van Morrison) - didn't make me cry b4 but now that I've associated it with parts of my movie its a tearjerker

and I know for a fact that just about anything Nanci Griffiths can do it too

The Unicorn by The Irish Rovers
Tells the tale of why there aren't any Unicorns around. After Noah built his ark, he was marching the animals in two by two, but the Unicorns were nowhere to be found. Alas, they were hiding and playing silly games, and they drowned.

A real downer of a song.

I think a more important question would be WHY would anyone WANT to listen to a song that makes them cry??!?! Who actually WANTS to feel sad? I sure don't!

If I have to come up with an answer to the original quesiton, I guess it would be Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters". I cry when I think how mighty the band used to be and then they write a really crappy, slow, boring song that completely made them out to be wimps.

Back in the day before people said back in the day:

Seasons in the Sun-Terry Jacks

some Jim Croce and Red Sovine songs

This one would put a lump in my throat as a kid:

Harry Chapin - Cats In The Cradle

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then
